Welcome to the forum, Justin! happy hi

Looks about perfect to me! What area are you in? All you need to know is when to plant what for your area. How big is the walking space between the two boxes?  Are you able to reach the trellis in the center of that one box  easily enough? Do you have photos of your garden?

Hi Justin,  Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here  Can you help us by including your State or major nearby city in your Location so we know more about the growing conditions in your area?  That will really help. Very Happy

Is this your first time using SFG?  If so, this will be the year of great learning.  We all go through it.   Embarassed  Just some general observations from me, in hot CA.  You mentioned shading out some of the plants but I will leave that to other members to respond.  The west afternoons get really hot here and we need some type of shad cloth to get through the worst part.  Lettuce bolts quickly in the heat.  You might get some at this time of the year (depending on your location) if they were more shaded.  Zucchini and yellow squash send out long leaves so they could do better in corner squares where they can fall/sprawl over the sides.  Sweet potatoes send out long vines and can be trellised.  Depending on your climate, it may be too warm for spinach to germinate, except for New Zealand spinach, which is not a real spinach but which grows well in my area.

I know others will welcome you and they may have some observations.  The members here are good folks and like to help others get going.  Ask away.  And, if you use the Search Box, you will find a ton of info on different subjects. And we love photos!

Sorry, I thought I put location in. I am located in south jersey, Just south of Philadelphia. I guess I'll just do an L for the cukes and melon rather than a T so I can at least reach one side. There is just a board separating the beds its a kit I bought at home depot .

You have drip irrigation? Lucky you! Yes, keep in mind that you'll need to reach all squares. Also, as Sanderson mentioned, some of the plants get really huge, like 4 squares huge, and prefer outside corners so they can hang over and ...hug you as you walk by. Haha!

Re:  Sweet Potatoes - you may have a problem with these where they are located.  It all depends on the variety.  Some are bush and some are vines that run all over the place.  I grow sweet potatoes (Beauregard) that need a trellis or they take over the garden.  Here is a picture of mine in Sept when they are fully grown and the leaves are starting to turn a bit yellow.  That trellis is 8 feet tall and the vines reached the top and started back down.

Welcome Justin

Garden looks good! Only thing I can add is this. If you are planting Sw. Potatoes, well, I'd move them to the edge or to a bin of some sort. They must be dug to harvest, MM is easy to get thru by hand, just remember harvest will disturb other plants. They can be cut back to 6 to 12 in. so no trellis is needed.

Aha.  So I should be cutting back all those vines and not worrying about trellising them.  Do the potatoes grow just as well (or better) if they do not have all that vine growth.

If you trim a reg. potato, it will just die(mine did!)  But being a vine, it will continue growing, and will prob. branch, but, cutting it back will not hurt the plant.  You can plant the cuttings if you have a long growing season (I have this) I've seen no difference in the roots, whether the vines are long or not.

Welcome, Justin, from Ohio! Plan looks good! Have your read the All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew? It is a great place to start, very informative! He recommends that trellises be set up on the north end of your garden, and here, that is what works to avoid shading out. Some folks probably like some shade however!

Keep lots of notes along the way, you will learn a lot this year! Glad you found us!
