I finally gave in and.....

Post  plantoid on 5/27/2016, 5:57 pm

Well our  slug fest and  Lilly beetle light bite ( vine weevil ) finally ticked me off BIG TIME !

I've spent many pounds on so called effective sprays, pellets and perfumes to snuff the little buggers out.  Result no money left in the bank & they are all laughing at me.

So I have resorted to the second mortgage cost of NEMASYS nematode  slug control & their Vine Weevil nematode control.

I put them in the fridge as directed once I received the two packs from the postie .

I had been hoping for a few hours respite from the light rain , medium rain , heavy rain , stair rods type  rain.
In the end I said stuff it I've had them for four days , so getting them applied was a priority .

Dressed in old clothes I braved all the above rains with a little bit of thunder thrown in for good luck and applied them via a hosepipe attached garden sprayer device. It took 26 minutes for I did them in two separate spraying events & I got as wet as if I'd dived into our garden pond .
Two separate events for the flower gardens at the front got a bigger dose of vine weevil treatment as we have a lot of lillies  there . The back garden got the heavier dose of the slug control for the same reasons ....  I prefer eating my veg rather than poisoning my self eating our flowers . Wink

Now I'm not quite as daft & crazy as it seems ( Yes I did do a bit of the , " Singing in the rain " song ) , The instructions say if you can apply them in the rain so much the better ,  as the nematodes will drip off the plants and soak deeper into the soil .  I did get some very very funny looks though  from the local car drivers as they went by ..... me spraying the garden with a hose pipe whilst it's hissing down with rain.

After putting everything away in the growing dark , having a shower & change of clothes , I've just made myself a strong thick with cream & some sugar a hot Irish type coffee but forgoing the whiskey and putting a decent slug of Jager Meister in instead then microwaving it a bit hotter .... Slurrrrrp !

Sure wish the U.S. would allow those nematodes in!
Sad
I wonder what the problem is...?

Just read about the stoned sheep in Rhydypandy. You know better that to dump your remains along the side of the road. Razz http://www.abc10.com/news/nation-now/stoned-sheep-cause-mayhem-after-eating-cannabis-plants/215977288

They both probably already exist in the states but big Pharma or other vested interests with access to government etc does not want them to unseat their position of wealthy slug killing chemical sales folk .

f you look up the , " Nemaslug Killer " name ,  you should be able to find the Latin name of classification for them ( as well as doing the same for the weevil killers )

They only really work well where the soil is damp enough that's why me spraying them in the rains should be so successful.

Wink Apparently ( it's supposed to be copyright/ patient register  illegal lol! ) you can grow your own nematodes once you get hold of an infected slug and have access to uninfected ones .. sort of making a cold brew soup with a bit of untreated greenery & some water . What a Face

The locals then eat the sheep ..  Is that  why so many locals appear to be  half-wits ?

Laughing    I have to clarify here ,  apparently , as I don't hold a legal qualification bit of paper  , I cannot say if it is really is illegal  or not  Wink

We went to a friends farm yesterday late afternoon for a BBQ and afew jars of ale in their farms 40 foot trailer home where such al fresco entertaining usually takes place .

It had been chucking it down by the bucketful all day . Parts of the roads were a good six inches deep in water in a lot of places.
The slugs however were not put off  as we walked back to the car ,  across a patch of 8 inch long grass at 22:00 hrs to come home  nearly every blade of it has a tiny pink slug up near the tip of the blade. At first I thought the grass had flowered such were their numbers.

Monty the farmer advised , " Tread carefully on those crutches Dave , last night I went " Apex over Basement on them "  ( Or quality well chosen agricultural words to that effect )
I laughed so much I too nearly followed suit.

When we got home I sprinkled some salt on the soles of shoes to kill off any free riders

You do tell great stories and give such good detail and valuable advice. I never knew there was anything but chemicals to get rid of slugs and snails. Go nematodes. It is amazing the amount of rain you get.
