Time to clean the fish tank, put the water on the SFG?

Post  auntiemommy on 5/11/2010, 3:25 pm

It is time to clean our 30 gal fish tank. I am wondering about putting the "dirty" water on the garden. Good idea or not?

ETA: Or should I dump in on the compost pile instead?

Yes, it's safe to do. It's a variable option in hydroponics. I think TimW has some practical experience using fish pond water.

My Husband swears by the fish water

Post  kiwirose on 5/11/2010, 3:40 pm

He will show you the latest patch of grass that has benifited from the water (I think he is dreaming, but is certainly isn't hurting the grass). We get 10 gallons of used fish water a week - he takes the first 5 for his grass and I take the 2nd 5 gallons for my seedlings and recent transplants. All of my youngins are just fine - can't say they are better or worse than if I had just used tap water (it hasn't rained here for weeks) - but they seem perfectly fine to me

I used to water my lucky bamboo with fish water all the time -- I had gorgeous bamboo.

I raise tadpoles every spring and always dump their dirty water in the garden. Go for it!
