Re: My SFG

Post  PB on 5/11/2010, 8:25 pm

Thank you everyone. I just had to show my "babies" off!!

The trellis is the electrical conduit, but under the red rocks is rubber roofing, so we couldn't put anything into the ground, so the 2x4's are screwed to the sfg. I have put twine on the trellis where the snow peas and cucumbers are. A really great benefit to the trellis is that I can tent anything that needs a little protection too.

I have butter crunch lettuce, spinach, mesculum mix, radishes, turnips, swiss chard, onions, butter head lettuce mix, one german johnson tomato, 3 yellow tomatoes, a black bell pepper, blue lake bush green beans and cucumbers.

In the second bed is celebrity tomatos. Today I also planted october beans and some swiss chard plants.

The other 4x4 has okra, cantaloupe and watermelon.
The 2- 2x2's have squash in them.

I am also working on 2- 2x8's for herbs.

I think I am hooked....................!!

Re: My SFG

Post  PB on 5/11/2010, 8:58 pm

The trellis is 5 feet tall. The conduit is every 12 inches.

I forgot to mention that there are marigolds in the corners and solar lights. There are fairies, gnomes, a hanging bird bath and a little place to sit. I wanted this to be a spiritual place as well as a food source. I guess food for the body and for the soul.

I have row gardened almost all of my life. No one will ever know what sfg has done for me. I got to the point gardening was more of a chore than a joy. Now I love my garden again!! Each little square is easy to take care of. All of my gardening tools fit into a little basket now. No tillers or tractors. I don't have to hoe any more!!

I do can and freeze, so we will have to find corn from another source. Probably the farmers market.

Great looking set up! Love the trellis. The fact that you could easily cover the whole thing to protect it is a huge plus! Well done. Very Happy

Cool Layout, I'm wondering if you get a chance you could take a picture from a little wider, showing the top of the trellis system, just would like to see how the whole setup looks, I'm thinking of doing the same in my new 8 by 4 bed.

It is raining today, so I don't know if the pictures would come out well. I will take a wider picture as soon as I can. Thank you for your interest!

It is so impolite to be envious, but, well, I am !

But PB, I am so happy for you that the garden is feeding your soul again. I so hear you about it being a spiritual place for you - it made me happy to read your words. Thanks!

MUST.STEAL.THIS.TRELLIS.IDEA. I was at the store last night looking to buy my trellis supplies and almost bought everything until I saw the price on the conduit elbows. YIKES! I have to either convince dh that it's worth it, or find another system. Maybe your idea would be cheaper and it certainly looks nicer. Great job!

The tomato is a German Johnson. It is an old pink variety. It was my Grandmother's favorite for eating. I love it to and it is sort of a tribute to her and her giving me the love of a garden. However as a child it was more a job than a joy! Then I grew up and realized all the life lessons gardening gave me at the side of my beloved Grandmother. So as I picked that first tomato. I smiled and thanked my grandmother for the "seed" of gardening she planted in me.
