I was looking at the July avatar from 2013 thread and I see that they were showing off first tomatoes and using those for their avatars. How about a little spin on that theme?

Show us your first reds, whites and/ or blues of the season!

Hmm. Cuke beetles are yellow, JB's and tiger beetles are green, ground beetles are black, there aren't enough aphids in the garden for the ladybird beetles to have shown up yet...

How about a beetle with a flag pin?


This is one of the dogbane beetles I 'grew' this year. I grow dogbane just because I love these shiny little guys. They only eat dogbane (or at least I've never seen them on anything else), and they are polite about it - no skeletonized messes. As a bonus, dogbane flowers smell nice, and the bees and pollinating wasps and leatherwing beetles like it too. It's native, but a bit invasive in its growing style (that annoying, underground, shoots popping up everywhere thing...)

Kewl avatars, y'all!

This was a real challenge for me. I finally found a red apple (on the ground -- didn't want to pick any, yet), a white oleander blossom and some fallen blue (sort of) petals from an agapanthus. No plants were harmed during the making of this avatar.

These are great! A challenge I must admit....big lemon yellow sunflower, milkweed bed. Flag gate! Cheated a bit....lol
