July 2016 lower south

Post  walshevak on 7/4/2016, 5:27 pm

Well I seem to be in between worm attacks right now.  Sprayed and picked off all blossoms and baby squash that had frass and pinholes.  I opened them and if a worm was there it got smashed.  One blossom had 3.  Got to some of the baby squash soon enough that I was able to cut out the worm and save 4 or 5 bites of squash.  Some just turned to mush, but  think lack of pollination had something to do with that as well.  Still spraying BT on days we don't get rain and I can see 2 yellow squash, 5 zukes, and 3 tatume squash growing.  One of the tatumes is big enough I may pick it today for dinner.

The corn is growing.  First planting is getting tall, but not ready to tassle yet.  Second planting is coming along.  Pulled all the garlic and am letting the tatume squash take over that bed.  Asparagus beans are starting to bloom and put out beans.  Armenian Cukes are blooming like crazy but no fruit on all 3 plantings.  Sweet potatoes in two cement mixing tubs are starting to stretch over to the other 2 tubs that I left ready for them to vine into.

Kay

Sounds good, Kay! Are they SVBs? Or squash beetles on your squash? Sounds like you have gained a handle on the sitch.

Pickle worms  We have about 3 seasons of them down here.  I think I'm in between right now.

My first planting of corn tasseled out this morning.  Only 5 stalks as the squirrels got most of the seed.  This is the first time I've ever tried corn in my home garden.
