Hello Fr Pasadena, TX (Zone 8b/9a)

Post  jw72085 on 3/8/2010, 4:43 pm

I am new both to Pasadena and to gardening. I live in an apartment now and would like to start as soon as possible on my garden. I am just trying to learn the basics as quickly as possible. Any tips or suggestions on what to grow will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome!. Pasadena is strawberry country! Seriously, they have a huge strawberry festival there every year. ... I assume you have a patio at your apartment? Read Mel's book? Built your boxes?
What stage are you at?

I am extremely new at gardening. I am very excited and feel overwhelmed. All I have done is received seeds (peas, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, squashes, melons, herbs, flowers) from a friend who's a master gardener in NOLA. I've done some reading, but not of Mel's book yet. I will purchase it this weekend. I would like to order a couple of his patio boxes and his soil soon. I'd like to start planting before the month ends. Is that even possible? Or have I gotten too late of a start? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'd say reading Mel's book cover to cover is the first step. Planting by the end of the month (assuming you have a place to plant) shouldn't be a problem. The plants you mentioned are mostly warm weather crops so getting them in by the end of March will be fine. If you were wanting lettuce, spinach or potatoes I'd say you were a bit late. (Note: I don't live South Texas but I am a native Texan and know that the Houston area is nearly always warmer than Dallas.)

You will find that you can get an answer to almost any gardening question you have in this SFG forum. Good luck.
