Newbie in London Ontario

Post  brendabtravelin on 7/28/2016, 9:44 pm

My name is Brenda. I've only just learned about SFG and will try to plant at least 1 - 4x4 - 16 grid square this year with fall plants! Hubby and I have just purchased a piece of land outside of town and I hope to eventually grow most of our own fruit and veg - but won't start bugging people with questions until after I finish the book!

glad you\'re here Brenda happy hi
from Kelejan :canada: in British Columbia.

I am your Host here in this great country of ours.  There are several Ontarians here so you will be in excellent company. Several first and second year gardeners so you will soon feel quite at home.

How much land do you have?  More than enough for several 4x4s I am betting.  I like the idea of you starting at least one bed with fall plants; it will give you the feel for SFGardening.  I started with two 4x4s then found that as I am a small person, 6 x 3 was better for me to reach into the centre of the beds.

What SFG book are you using? There are several editions.

Welcome Brenda from a second year SFGer in Ottawa (they call me TD). This is a great forum for asking/answering questions and sharing ideas. We like photos as well.

thanks!

Post  brendabtravelin on 7/28/2016, 10:26 pm

Thanks for the welcome!

I just bought the 2nd edition of SFG book yesterday and should have it finished by tomorrow... I can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing about this!

My hubby and I have just bought a piece of land about 3/4 of an acre just outside of London. It's zone 6B so should be decent growing. We've just started building a shipping container home so we're busy and until he's done with the building I'll be the only one gardening... he is great about helping but I don't want to take him away from the home building!

My first question is what about growing crops like blueberries - do bushes like this that would take a couple of years to get going really well work in an SFG setting?

Brenda, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here It's great that you are reading the All New Square Foot Gardening book! It is a wonderful resource to which you will refer many times as you get started. I think the hardest part is finding vermiculite and at least 5 wonderful types/sources of compost. There is a bonus of starting in the fall because you can build huge piles of leaves, barn manure, veggie and fruit scraps, crab and shrimp shells, etc. Composting is another subject. You asked about blueberries? Someone in the north east should be able to help you. I know other berries do fine in Mel's Mix but don't know anything about blueberries.

We get really excited when someone is reading the book and wants to start SFG. bounce Yes, photos of your journey. Oh, and keep a journal.

Welcome Brenda, from Ohio!  Glad you have found us, and even better that you have someplace to garden!

Keep us posted on your progress, and as sanderson said, we love photos, and a journal is essential!

Brenda, I also started my first SFG in the fall (2011).  It was a great learning experience.  I planted all kinds of veggies that I have never planted before.  Just a few of each to see what would grow in that climate.  That helped me learn what would grow in the early spring and in the fall for the next year.  By the time the fall came around again, I was experienced with my climate and knew what could be planted and by that time had expanded my garden so I could plant a lot of different things.

P.S. from Kelejan :canada:

Brenda:  keep posting on this, your own thread, and come over and see all of Canada on the Canadian thread.

Trolley Driver (TD) has his own thread and also pops over to THE CANADIAN REGION; WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN JULY 2016 (CHANGED MONTHLY ) to see how the rest of the country is doing.  TD tells us that he uses his own thread as a kind of diary for himself without overburdening the Regional Thread and I think that is a great idea.  I wished I had thought of it when I first joined.
