RJ, Beautiful. I tried hibiscus 20 years ago but they didn't survive the winter. Do you bring it in?

RJ ... I noticed that you are from Bellows Fall, VT. My wife and I have been there several times when we visit friends who live across the Connecticut River in Walpole, NH. Nice area. BTW We live in Ottawa, Canada.

There is a species of hibiscus called Hardy Hibiscus.  Many different varieties of hardy hibiscus.  They will survive a freeze.  I planted 3 about 10 years ago.  Two eventually died because of lack of attention.  One still survives.  We have had temps down in the teens and it still survived.

My sole surviving hardy hibiscus.  I am going to cut it down this year because it is a magnet for caterpillar damage.  Tired of spraying it all summer long.

This morning was forecasted to be a near-frost. (forecast was low 33 F) Just in case, I looked outside this morning to check for frost and it looked nothing like your photo of the other morning. Hooray!

Just a thought. Where would those caterpillars show up if you didn't have that hibiscus. Sometimes, a plant can be a pest magnet to protect the rest of the garden. ??

Excellent question! Yes SAnderson, that would be called a  (pest) trap plant!

I got frost in Keene! I harvested all my green tomatoes and cut down all my vines yesterday afternoon.
I prepped, cooked down and canned 36 pints of spaghetti sauce this weekend.

If you don't have enough storage room, you know you can always ship them here Wink  Not one can of tomatoes this year. Next year!

Yea, but that hibiscus is right next to my front door.  The leaves look like lace.  Actually no leaves are left.  So maybe I should transplant it somewhere no one will see it.
