Plantoid' s going into hospital ....

Post  plantoid on 9/13/2016, 3:28 pm

I got a most welcome longed for phone call this evening , it looks like I am finally going into hospital tomorrow lunch time to be operated on on Thursday morning to get a complete left leg replacement knee.

The operation has been cancelled by the hospital four times already in the last three years ..it's six years since it was first decided that I needed the operation to help me keep my mobility & some form of fitness .

As my health has slowly & definitely deteriorated over tis six year period due to restricted mobility & a stroke  I'm now considered a very high risk patient , so I'm also  booked in for a high dependency bed for five days .... in case of heart attack , heart failure , blood clots or stroke etc, etc.

I'm going off line in a few minutes.. so don't leave me messages of hope etc etc.please.

cheers I'll either come back and greet you all in a week or so or I'll haunt your gardens , making all your plants grow and grow Laughing

So ,  I'll catch you all later on ,   one way or another Wink

Sorry plantoid, we are not a very obedient group!  ((((Healing vibes)))) coming your way.  I have a good feeling about it!

No need to feel like replying to these unsolicited well wishes, either.

Hope all goes well, Plantoid.  It is such a shame that you have had to wait for so long for something that could have improved your quality of life so many years ago.

Looking forward to your return.

Hubby went through knee replacement at 65, too. It was definitely worth it.

Pray all goes well plantoid.

My wife has had both knees replaced (within a 9 month period). She recovered well. Best thing is to do the required physio exercises without fail before and after the operation.

Re: Plantoid' s going into hospital ....

Post  plantoid on 9/17/2016, 5:39 am

Aw shucks ! Wink  I didn't realise you guys cared   Embarassed   Very Happy

Well it didn't quite work out as planned ( the best laid plans of mice & men oft go awry )

Here is what really happened .....

Thanks for the email , how are You all ?

I'm back home in the palatial residence , the butler has buttled and given me breakfast .

 New latest situation report ( a.k.a. SITREP ) .

I went to the hospital, laid on a bed and as it was rather warm that lunch time ( 24 oC ) I thought nothing of being lathered in sweat.
The registering in team took loads of blood samples and my pulse.  A guy with a beard appeared on scene  he also took my wrist pulse & looked puzzled and so put his stethoscope on my back . , he said nothing ,walked away and suddenly a couple of people wheeling a machine , plus him came back .

" Hmmmm. We'd like to run an ECG on you Dave " ,he said , as I was being fitted up with the sticky pads for the leads to the ECG machine
Just then the anesthetist came into the room " I'm so sorry " ,she said , " We will have to cancel the op as there is no intensive care bed available due to two  emergency admissions early this morning "  . I got a bit deflated for a few seconds as this is now the fifth time the leg op has been cancelled.

" OK I understand , can I call my wife and get her to come & collect me ? " , I said .
"Well no Dave , you are looking like you're having a heart attack, this is why I'm going to do the ECG " the doc replied .
Two tests later he tells me I'm going into emergency cardiac care unit asap . That the head cardiologist wants to carry our an angiogram on me as soon as possible as I may have a severe restriction in one of my hearts arteries .

Next thing I know I'm somewhere else in the hospital,   hooked up to a number of a machines with someone sat by my side . They are trying to talk to me about threading a probe  up my right arm ,across my chest & into my heart etc .as my heart rate is banging on at 127 beats per minute & my wrist pulse is only showing an erratic 48 per minute ,  plus I'm breathing in a very laboured fashion like a clapped out steam train trying to get up Drumocheter pass .

They had a full schedule till 21 .00 hrs in the place where the angiogram was to be done  but will see if they can get me on the slab last thing in the day . Come 20.30 I'm told  it is not possible due to an emergency admission at 19.45 ,I will be done at 12.00 Thursday .
Every 10 min through outthe night someone came and did a load of monitoring and checks upon me .

12 noon on the dot I'm on the table prepped for the angiogram , It was amazing , to feel the probe being vibrated & turned about inside me and to see a wide screen TV picture of it all in a reddish brown & gray outline of all the veins & arteries etc as the probe moved through me.
The Cardiologist was talking me through every thing and answering my numerous questions . He told  me I do not have any blockages in or around my heart, all the valves are working well , no leakages etc. He also said that whilst there is a slight furring up of arteries ( less than 50 % ) for a nearly 66 year old man who has a family history of heart & artery difficulties I have nothing at all to worry about .
I was sent back to the cardiac unit , later in the afternoon the cardiologist along with a pharmacist and a path lab person come & visit me .

Evidently medications & a combination of some  that I've been taking for over the last ten years are what have caused the high heart rate , my body recognised the heart rate speed as my body needing to produce adrenaline ( I'm in danger,  run away ....sort of response ) , it produced it in massive amounts and made my heart beat even faster .. I think the highest recorded flight was 158 beats per minute for nearly 30 seconds and as a result of such short beats my blood pressure plummeted as each beat was so fast my heart was barely able to pump blood .
I may or may not be free of it , so the culprit medications  have been withdrawn and I've been put on beta blockers to keep my heart rate down , blood pressure is fine .

I will be returned to the imminent surgery list for my knee op but will still require time in the specialist care bed just in case things go awry(  ie blood clots ) , someone should be in touch with me in a week or so .

I don't feel ill  , etc ,etc.  I  just have a four inch long by 2 inch wide fading aching deep bruise in my right wrist in line with my thumb. It's also nice to realise / find  that I'm free of a burning sensation that I've had for the last nine or so years .... something akin to a razor burn on my face , arms , hands & nether regions ( highly likely related to the withdrawn drugs )

The Scarlet Pimpernel lives to fight another day .

WOW...  You have been through quite the medical marathon.  Glad to hear your heart issue has been resolved but sense you're frustrated about your knee.

Hopefully it will be addressed sooner than later.
