SFG is making me lazy

Post  Jay Bird on 5/13/2010, 8:02 am

In the past, every evening after work I have spent a couple hours in the garden weeding, tilling side rows etc, Now I dont have anything to do! I go out to the garden when I get home and check things and NOTHING everything is growing great NO WEEDS no need to till side rows NOTHING,

Reckon I will have to build more boxes!

That is what I tend to do as well. Wander around, pull a few small errant weeds, see if the tomatoes have any suckers that need to come off, and water by a bucket. Then I harvest what can be harvested and deadhead the few marigolds or zinnias that need it. All 10 beds take less than 30 minutes a day. So I'm planning another ornamental raised bed!

I forget that not all of us speak the same gardening language!

Sucker: a side branch that needs to be pinched off when growing indeterminate tomatoes on a trellis. I let a few get away from me and now have a tomato jungle, so am being a bit more attentive.

Deadhead: pull off faded flowers so the plant will continue to grow and bloom

What's a sucker?

Post  ander217 on 5/13/2010, 8:56 pm

A sucker is someone who tills and hoes their row-style garden.

A deadhead is a SFG who sleeps late in the morning while their sucker neighbors are tilling and hoeing their row gardens.

I have been both, so I speak from experience.

I thought deadheading was listening to Sugar Magnolia while sitting on your patio sipping iced tea and watching your garden grow.
