N & C Midwest: November 2016

Post  Scorpio Rising on 11/1/2016, 8:09 pm

Here we are, on an almost 80* day, thinking about the approaching seasons, putting our compost piles in order to rest over the winter, and planting GARLIC!

Gorgeous unseasonably warm fall day here.  Leaves coming down.  My compost pile of flat.  Rebuild starting this weekend, I have a partially disintegrating bale of straw in my driveway, and 2 pails of cow poo to get it started.  And leaves of course!

I already have a "Wish List" for seeds going!  Isn't that nuts?

Green Ice lettuce!  Thanks, Mr. Booker!

I am sure as the off season rolls on, it will become longer!

If anyone new is reading this, Baker Creek has The most beautiful catalogue in my little opinion.  It is veggie porn.... oh... I'm so bad!

Sanderson
The first shipment goes out Nov 25th.  Looks like there is a free catalog plus bigger catalogs that cost more, note both international and North American versions.
The bigger catalog I have never purchased, but in the past people said it is worth it.  Maybe someone can tell us.

I tried to order the big catalog but their checkout system got all messed up when I tried to pay using PayPal. Very frustrating and now I am concerned I put in more than one order even though PayPal has not recorded it. Sometimes technology drives me crazy. Will try again some time.

Finally success. My order has been placed for the big catalog. Looking forward to spending some cold winter days sitting next to the fireplace and enjoying this book.

Here is what they say about it on their website.

"With 355 full-color pages of pure gardening delight, the new Whole Seed Catalog contains the very best of our 2017 heirloom offerings--old favorites and new discoveries--over 1800 varieties, accompanied by page after breathtaking page of our usual stunning photography. But WSC offers so much more--articles by well-known heirloom authors, recipes, food history and the latest advice on how to grow and save seed from treasured heirloom varieties. In just a few short years, Whole Seed Catalog has come to be regarded as the preeminent resource for amazing heirloom/open-pollinated seeds, as well as cutting-edge information for and about the pure-food movement."

Well, it's finally happened; November is here!  Cool, windy, damp here.  Inevitable I suppose, but enjoyed the nice autumn weather!

The only things still in are Chinese Red Meat radishes and one Black Seeded Simpson.  My flowers are still blooming though!  Especially the nasturtiums, geraniums, and marigolds.

Next task, rebuild compost pile with bale of straw and cow poo.  Then button it up with the camo tarp for the cold.  And leaves, of course!

The weekend was spent in the Windy City, a great time!  Lovely weather, great food, and museums and shopping.

Took the Amtrak train from Toledo to Chicago...I have driven that corridor, and I might say I will never do it again, the train was comfy with food and libations, taxis right there, at Union station, it was super easy.  To the hotel, super easy. No $60/night parking fee...you can uber for that

Will do it again!  DC or NYC!!! Capitol Limited!  Nice train!

Will finally plant the garlic this weekend.  Supposed to be seasonally cold.  Also will deal with the straw bale and cow poo.  And stuff I have, kale, coffee grounds etc.  Lots of leaves to come!

Will pull the Chinese Red Meat radishes and my one Black Seeded Simpson lettuce..wah!

I have received the Pinetree catalog!  HOPE!  Planning.....

Got the compost pile readied with straw, cow poo, egg shells, coffee grounds, kitchen stuff, mostly kale and radish tops, and settled in.  Will top with some leaves/grass clippings and cover with my camo tarp soon!

The only thing left out there is Mache, I pulled the last radishes today.  The Mache is so close to the growing surface that it seems impervious to the cold!  Yay!

I sauteed FB radishes with Swiss Chard and they were great. Has anyone sauteed hotter varieties? and do they turn mild when cooked?

Yes, we got snow, yesterday several times, and overnight too!  Seasonable I suppose.  We had a warm and wonderful fall here...

I still need to get my garlic in.  Supposed to warm up here this week.  Hopefully will get it done!  Cold here, 32* today and huge winds...braved it for church and a couple errands.  Done and hunkered down now!
