First freeze coming to Illinois tonight.

Post  MrBooker on 11/12/2016, 1:10 pm

We have been blessed this fall so far. Never had a frost yet but now their predicting a freeze.
I'm not to excited yet. It's only getting down to 32*. I wouldn't call that a freeze.

ANYWAY.....   I'm not taking any chances and here's a few pis of my hoops.

LQQK at the size of this carrot. I noticed it as I was watering.

Beautiful, Mr. B! You have lots of wongderful veggies to get you well into the winter. Is that plastic on your hoops or agribon?

I have one gargantuan carrot also, that I left in so that I can collect seeds from it next year. I left another large one next to it in case there has to be two.

It is 6 mil plastic. I will keep everyone posted as the winter goes on. I've never tried this before. Really looking forward to it.  SFG...  Three steps for success. 1. Keep a ledger.  2. keep a ledger. 3. keep....  well, you get it.  Very Happy

Much appreciated Trolley. When I woke up at 4:30 a.m, it was 31*. I just checked the temp again and it's down to 28*
I'm going outside shortly to check everything out. I may let a another light freeze hit then I'll cut the tops off my carrots and parsnips and put a good layer of mulch down.
After some research, the internet says root crops can be left in the ground over winter if the soil doesn't freeze solid and the tops are removed.

OMG: I just remembered. I forgot to harvest my Bell peppers and Gypsy peppers yesterday and it's 28* now and they were NOT under plastic.  affraid   I'M OUTTA HERE..  bounce

Growing Bell peppers, Gypsy Peppers, orange tangerine, Patio peppers and Mexi bells. The Mexi bells are really hot until they turn red then they mellow out with just a hint of heat. Having Mexi bells with Chilli tonight.. The orange Tangerines are a small pepper sweet as sugar.

Such crazy weather in zone 6a this fall.  Upper 60's to lower 70's rest of the week and only down to lower 40's to mid 50's for the lows and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
