Watering Strawberry Plants

Post  Sarahblev on 11/19/2016, 2:43 pm

I live in Southern Pennsylvania.  In October, I planted strawberry plants.  I have been watering them when the ground gets really dry.  This seems like common sense to me, since they have been recently planted, but I'm not sure if I need to be watering as much as I am, since they should be going into dormancy soon.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Hi Sarahblev. Welcome from Atlanta, GA! Glad you've joined us.

I don't have strawberries (YET, lol), so I can't answer your question. But I did a search (upper left corner) under strawberries & found 118 topics on them, including winterizing. So you might want to take a look there...

And I'm sure someone will be along to help you as well.

I DO know they should be mulched! What kind are you using?

glad you\'re here Sara  thinking

Strawberries do not need much water when they are dormant.  Just make sure that the soil it is not dry, just moist, then mulch with leaves, straw,  etc.   Mind you, this is what I feel should be done.  Others may have different opinions, which is what makes gardening such an interesting pastime.

If you do a Search, as sanderson suggested, look up mulching strawberries.  118 references should keep you busy.  Let us know what you find.  Doing your own Search is a great way to gain knowledge. If you need extra help, then call on us.

Re: Watering Strawberry Plants

I live in nearby Maryland.  I just retired my strawberry bed that I planted in the spring of 2012.  I got 4 years of harvest out of it.  I'll replant in the spring, but I wish I had known that they can be planted in the fall.  To answer your question, I only watered my plants in the spring while they were producing fruit.   And I never mulched them either, and we had some tremendous snowfalls the past few years.  They grow very well in our area.  Good luck!

Thanks for your responses!  I've been growing raspberries and blueberries for a while, now, but this is my first year for Strawberries.
