I discovered a couple of tiny (and I mean tiny) white scallop squash today. One looks like it may not have been pollinated yet.  The other one has a little bite taken out of it. It is now covered with pantyhose (not mine Very Happy ).

Qualifying about the pantyhose really got me laughing this morning, TD! Thanks for that. It'll be interesting to see if you're Patty pans come to fruition. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

The 4x4 SFG bed of everbearing strawberries just keeps on giving. I just picked this full bowl of berries and there is still more to come.

Your strawberry experience is blowing me away, TD.  I really need the name of that plant!  There must be a different name other than everbearing...?  Tristar maybe? Or Seascape?

I honestly do not know the name. We bought the plants at a garden centre associated with a grocery chain and I don't think I kept any of the information that came with them. When I get a chance I'll look through my mess of papers related to gardening to see if there is anything that will give us a hint. The one thing I find with these everbearing strawberries is that they are not very sweet. But it is fun to pick strawberries in September here in the great white north.

I am really liking my megatrellis and those wonderful Canada Crookneck Squash that are hanging from it.  There are eight squash ... five on the north side (leg) of the trellis and three on the south side.

Beautiful sunny day with 80F temperature. This is the best weather we have had since summer began. I actually watered the SFG today which I think is only the third time this summer.

Here is today's harvest of golden squash, okra (probably will go to the compost bin), golden wax bush beans and three kinds of cucumbers. Not shown but also harvested for lunch and snacks throughout the day were some sweet million tomatoes, ground cherries, everbearing strawberries, lettuce, mizuna, spicy salad greens, parsley, red onion, icicle radish and red radish. Added to my lunch salad was a hard boiled egg from eggs obtained from a friend's chickens.

Overhead photo from a second floor window. I'm thinking of putting in one or two beds where the grass is to the left of the existing SFG. The neighbour has some washing on the line in the upper left corner. Very Happy

Re: Third Year SFG in Canada

Post  trolleydriver on 9/14/2017, 4:42 pm

Decided it was time to clean up some of the SFG beds. There were a few weeds to get rid of, one dead tomato plant to remove and some things to harvest.

Here is what I got today.  There are two nice True Black Brandywine Tomatoes, three small Roma Tomatoes, a couple of Bunching Onions, and two white root things.  I should have been harvesting the bunching onions during the summer but forgot they were there. There are more in the square where I took these two.

Now for those white root things. I try to keep good (not neat) notes of what I plant in each square. So I went to my notes to find out what was in that particular square. And this is what was written ... "Something ?".  You have to be kidding me. Now I remember wanting to try to grow a late crop of Daikon Radish because the Spring planted radishes go to flower early and do not produce good roots. The roots of these later plants look like the Daikon Radish photos I found on the Internet so I believe that is what they are.

This is the bed that had the Daikon Radish growing in it. You can see the remaining plants in the top right corner square.  The near square has lettuce and next to that Mizuna which were started just a few weeks ago. The far leaft front square has late started onions. Behind the Mizuna there is Spring planted Bunching Onions and to the left of them is a square of Leeks. There are other things in this bed as well.

Looking at the bed below, the "column" of squares on the left contains Kale and Swiss Chard which are being ravished by slugs. The next column over started out with Garlic but after that was harvested I planted some Kale, Beets and Lettuce ... these are all quite small.  Moving to the right the next column has various Peppers which have not done well and one sqaure of Wax Beans.  And the column to the far right has Melon (nothing doing), Cucumber, and Cucamelon (done really well).

Finally, the bed below has Tomatoes along the trellis in the top row.  The next row down has pathetic Peppers.  After that there is a row that has two squares of Leeks. The near row has a square of Kale and a square of Chard.

Nope, maybe got two Green Bell Peppers, a couple of small Banana Peppers, one Jalapeno Pepper, and a few hot Chinese Five Color Peppers. Really not a good year.

I forgot to post this pic of a new Canada Crookneck Squash. I think this guy will run out of time to develop.

The weather is amazing for this time in September with temps in the 80s. The veggie garden is still producing cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, radishes, zucchini, squash, strawberries and so on.

White Scallop Squash.

Canada Crookneck Squash (CCS) on the megatrellis.

The CCS in the foreground was harvested today.

Pretty Nasturtiums hanging out of the everbearing strawberry bed.

My cucumber plants have done well this year but some of the leaves are starting to die off.  It's getting time to pull the plants but there are still a few more cukes growing. I harvested these cukes this morning.

Things are starting to wind down.  I think I'll wait a while before I harvest these carrots in the Top Hat.

Sweet Million Tomatoes are still producing. The Roma plants are on their last legs with some ripe and lots of green tomatoes still left on them. The Brandywines are pretty much finished except for one or two fruit.

This is supposed to be a Sakatas Sweet Melon.  The plant is still looking pretty healthy.

On the other hand, the cucumber plants have just about had it. However, I'm still finding cukes.

Canada Crooknecks nearing harvest time.  The vines are showing signs of dying off.

We finally got some Sunflowers!

We had a frost last night so I decided to harvest the Canada Crookneck Squash. I took seven and left one one the vines to see if it will continue to mature.  The seven weigh a total of ten pounds with the largest individual squash coming in at two pounds. One of the smaller squash looks a bit green and probably should have been left outside.

Nice! We have some great fence panels leaning against a shed. Maybe next year I can get them put up for my climbers. I would love to be able to post some pics like these. I love you

This coming Monday (October 9th) will be Thanksgiving Day in Canada. I want to give thanks for a good harvest. This is what one of our kitchen counters presently looks like. There is much more not in the photos (e.g., garlic, strawberries, raspberries) plus things in the freezer (e.g. cucumber ice cubes) and all the wonderful things we have already devoured. And there is still a lot of things out in the garden.
