Rained off and on today- have a total of 1.8 inches this week, and it's getting colder- weekend is in the freezing range at night. It's pretty frustrating for me, because I tried to get a jump on Spring planting this year, and start seeds indoors, but the frost cycle is real wacky here and I cannot get my plants outside to harden off, so they are getting pretty "leggy" waiting to be set out in their beds. I've already lost the cucumber seedlings to damping off and I hope that I have that problem contained. Oh well...

Same here and there was an article in the paper this morning about the professional farmers having the same problems. The ground is so soggy they can't get the equipment into the fields to harvest the asparagus. They're having to haul them out by hand. They can't do their transplanting either because of the cold nights. Grrrrr!

I watched the local news where a man was standing in his field of beans that had their first or second set of true leaves. He was worried about how the rain was going to affect the $10,000 invested in the crop. I'm sitting inside wondering why he didn't know heavy rain was expected. Well, I'm sure there is more to commercial farming of which I am not aware.

My seedlings got some sun today, then it turned into cold rain and they all had to be trotted back inside under the lights. The 10 day forecast is 60s and 70s.

Yup. Perfect timing. I've been working the Expo for weeks, while the weather was awful. Today is the last day, and now, starting tomorrow, the weather forecast is perfect for gardening and I am free of all other obligations. YEE-HAH! LIFE IS GOOD!  happy turtle

Just started to look a bit like Spring here in Ottawa and now we have a special weather statement from Environment Canada. We are headed back to Winter like conditions with rain, freezing rain, snow, high winds and freezing cold temperatures.  Blame it all on a Colorado low.

Past 3 days couple inches of snow, next 2 days rain, currently still raining and total swampy conditions.  Hope my chickens can swim.  Then then could swim over to the lettuce box for a feast of sprouts that reseeded from last year.

The weather is crazy!  Friday it was 57 when I got to work at 250pm. Sunny and windy.  Got off at 605pm and it was 37 degrees, cloudy, and the wind was howling.  By the time I got home 12 miles away it was 34.  We got down to 27 last night.  There were a few snow flurries that had a light dusting on the deck by 10pm.

Today the wind was still blowing but the sun was out trying to warm us up.  I think it got to the low 50 degree range this afternoon.
In my little greenhouse it was almost 70 degrees.

This coming week is to be much more pleasant with more seasonal temp. Oh, and the sun is supposed to shine  bounce

Post  farmersgranddaughter on 4/8/2018, 5:23 pm

Temps fell below freezing the last two nights and we had some snow yesterday.  My husband placed a tarp over the SFG bed where peas, lettuce, spinach, and radishes had sprouted.  I removed it today and found that, other than one pea plant that got a little smashed by water standing on the tarp, everything else was fine.

Cloudy days have affected the seed starts in the bay window.  Some of the plants are looking a little leggy, straining toward the light.  Sunny days are in the forecast this week so I'll start taking plants outside daily for a little sunshine.

I started some herbs in peat pots and have found that they aren't doing near as well as seeds started in plastic trays.  I think the peat pots are wicking the water away from the roots as the peat walls are moist but the soil seems to dry out rather quickly.

April 25th is supposed to be our last frost date.  If I don't transplant the seed starts out to the garden in a few weeks, I'll have cucumbers, melons, squash, and zucchini climbing up the blinds.

Don't even dare to talk to me about global warming. It's not happening in my area. Temps are way below the normal average for this time of the year.

Updated forecast for the weekend:

- Saturday - 10 to 25 cm (4 to 10 inches) of snow
- Sunday - an abundance of freezing rain

Yikes!  Will Spring ever arrive?  On a positive note I did see the first robin of the year in my yard today.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?

Post  DorothyG on 4/13/2018, 12:07 am

I usually complain about the weather being too cold or too wet.  Today the relative humidity was only 38% at 6pm, earlier in the day it was 47%,  the high temp was 88 degrees F, and the wind was out of the south at 15 to 20 mph with gust 25 to 30 mph. The sun was glaring down.  If the wind hadn't been so strong it would have been miserable hot.
This is from the National Weather Service for our area through Wednesday next week;

"Windy conditions will continue this evening across the area.
winds of 25 to 35 mph will be possible and gusts to 40 mph.

The windy conditions will produce fire weather concerns,
although moisture will increase through tonight.

Some scattered storms will be possible towards sunrise on
Friday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Windy conditions will persist into Friday as a strong storm
system slowly moves through the region. Gusts over 40 mph will
again be possible on Friday.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible
from around midday Friday
afternoon through Friday evening across much of the area. The
greatest risk for severe storms will occur along and west of an
Osceola to Marshfield to Gainesville line. Isolated supercell
thunderstorms capable of producing all modes of severe weather
will be possible if enough instability can develop.
If
instability remains weaker, severe storms will still be
possible, however the overall threat will be lower.

Another freeze is possible Saturday night and again Sunday
night.

Gusty southwest winds of 30 to 35 mph will be possible over
southeast Kansas and western Missouri on Tuesday."

The bold, larger font is mine Wink
I'll just keep tending my seedlings inside.

And here is what Environment Canada says we have in store for us. Please note that this weather system is coming into Canada from the Central Plains States of the USA. Of course, we add our arctic cold air and this is what you get.:

A messy mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain this weekend into Monday.

A moisture laden low pressure area over the Central Plains States will amble slowly towards the lower Great Lakes this weekend. As the low gets closer, brisk northeasterly winds will pump in cold arctic air, forcing temperatures to fall to near or below the zero degree mark on Saturday.

Rain ahead of this low will begin this afternoon and will change to snow tonight. Brief freezing rain is possible in a few localities during the change over to snow. The snow will persist into Saturday with total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres possible over some areas by Saturday evening. Snow may be mixed with ice pellets at times which may limit the snow accumulation. A lull in the precipitation is likely Saturday night.

As the low gets closer, another area of snow and ice pellets will move into the region Sunday morning before changing to freezing rain late Sunday. The freezing rain may persist into Monday. Some locales could see significant ice accumulations. Ice accumulations combined with gusty northeast winds may result in widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.

My deep apologies, TR. I think you are getting the storm that we had yesterday and is now tapering off. We got lots of slush balls, snow, rain, sleet, ice, yech. At least it is melting fast but I am glad I still have the studded snow tires on the car.

It was Spring Monday!? Not so much now.

Our LFD: April 22 - May 1

The old timers in the area say not to plant until the snow is off Snow Peak! I usually go by that but it is SOOOO hard to wait!  So, starting seeds and getting beds ready and finding all the hoses and soaker hoses for when it is FINALLY Spring.
