The jet stream is the culprit.

Blizzard tonight. Hurricane-force winds. Up to six inches of snow by tomorrow. Just finished my weekly shopping and my power out emergency box is at the ready.

Snowing like crazy right now. Just got back home from lunch with friends and it was a treacherous drive.  Expecting 10 inches of snow by Monday morning. Happy I am retired and do not have to drive to work in the morning.

Cloudy but no rain. A week of rain may start on Thursday. Tuesday or Wednesday, we are planning to drive to Tulare (south) to see the World Ag Expo 2017. Never been though it's almost in our back yard.

Latest shot from the in-laws. The powers-that-be had to release water from 2 dams upstream on the Sacramento River. Thank goodness the rain stopped for a few days. Hopefully they can get a handle on this before the next storm hits. So far, they're saying the next one won't be as bad as the last one. Fingers crossed. affraid

Waching the news "live." Getting dark. River rising. Bridges jammed with traffic. Some people have no place to go. They kept saying "no problem" until there was. Everybody pointing fingers. This is the closest we've ever been to a disaster. We're in no danger but our hearts are breaking for Oroville. Thank goodness it isn't raining.

They have increased the flow down the main, damaged spillway and it seems to be working. The lake is now only 2" flowing over the emergency spillway and not getting any worse. We're still holding our breath. Shocked

Had a flash of lightning and rumble of thunder earlier, I don't remember that happening in February before. High winds. Power has been flickering now and then, but not enough to reset the microwave clock. Trees reported down. Online says 45mph gusts, friend of a friend says there might have been a 60. Rain just switched to snow. I went out to add more bricks to the plastic on the hoop houses, because they'd started to flap and catch wind. Unpleasant windchill and my paths are getting unsafe because they are too wet for their clay content=slippery. I think I need to buy some woodchips. Not sure the additional bricks will be enough. I hope the garden fence is enough to catch anything that comes off overnight.

Yesterday we set a new record snowfall for February 12, breaking the old record set back in the 1988.  We got 28 cm (11 inches) which is really not that much but there seems to be more than 11 inches on my property.

Last year on February 16 we set the highest 24 hour snowfall ever in this city with 51 cm which smashed the old record of 40.6 cm from March 2, 1947.

Parliament Buildings in snow (I'm not sure when this was taken).

The storm is on its way out, now the gusts are starting to whip things around a bit. We still have some more snow to come, but at least we didn't get buried, less than 10", and it isn't heavy. No power outages here, just enjoying the day off.

Didn't lose power, but didn't sleep well at all. The wind was very loud, gusty, and noisy. I went out in the morning to check on the garden and found one of the wagon-style hoop houses had 'exploded.' The wind had apparently lifted it enough that the PVCs sprung out of hoop-shape, and the screw holding the center bar to one of the ends is gone. However, the Walmart purchased black/red spring clamps kept the plastic attached to the center bar, and the SnapClamps kept the Agribon30 fabric attached to the PVC, so everything was all in a tangled heap, still in the garden, rather than strewn through the neighborhood. (But I did come across one of the Dollar Store clips two yards outside the garden...) I tried to put the structure back up, but between the ground being partially frozen and the expectation that the winds will continue into the afternoon, I don't know if it will stay put.

Lots of rain over night so the Cape has dodged the deep snow bullet but I could ice skate on my driveway.  Never had that before.  Tidal flooding is expected  around noon.  I made it into work but the wind is blowing, and the snow is now falling... sideways.

Yea, this is Bad.

The weather forecast is sun until Wednesday with rain starting Wednesday and then going for the next 7 days after that.  That end the 10 day forecast.

The Oroville Dam is already 100% capacity.  Basically, everything downstream is about to get whatever flood mother nature wants to give them in the wettest month of an extremely wet year, coupled with a chance of a 30 foot high emergency spillway dam failure releasing a 30 foot high wall of water to drop 700 ft to the feather river and roar down stream.

Of course, no worries about the 770 foot Oroville dam...

All I can say is I hope the bedrock anchoring the spillway and the end of the main dam towards it is sound and free of fissures and cracks that will be exploited by the water.

Otherwise, we have 3+ million acre feet of water sitting 700 feet up that is coming for the Sacramento delta.

Sunny, 60*F, calm. No excuse not to turn the compost pile. I have a feeling that Oroville will dodge the bullet, even with the next rain. If nothing else, it was a good real-life Emergency Preparedness Plan exercise. The planners will now know how really hard it is to evacuate the population and what improvements are needed.

Hopefully, it's a scary math exercise, with the outflows tapped open we're outflowing about 100,000 CFS a second and dropping the reservoir level about 1/3 foot per hour.

Four days ago, peak inflows hit 190,000 CFS.

To be safe, they need the water down below the spillway base.  At current rate, water should be about 20 feet down from the top when the rain starts.
