In a previous post, I explained that nothing like this has happened here for at least 25 years.  It's QUITE atypical recently.  Nevertheless, I expect more of the same in future years.  Cycles, after all.  It was cold around the beginning of the 20th century, warm from around 1910 to 1940, cold from the 1940's to sometime in the '70s, then it warmed.  Then there was "the pause," and now it seems that things are rapidly cooling off.

I'm concerned about my buried plants and shrubs, especially after the roof was raked.
Donna, I get it.  Strange things dost cometh our way.

Scorpio,

Contrary to official predictions, of course.

Best to be prepared.  I purchased taller snow boots, several pairs of gloves, fleece PJs,  ski socks, waterproof rain pants, etc., within the last year.  Next will be additional frost cloth and possibly another tarp or two.  I've already stocked up on non-LED, old-fashioned Christmas tree lights in the hope of protecting my fruit trees, come early spring.

^ Although the physical pressure of large chunks of snow being dumped down from above isn't as nice as the coverage from a natural snow fall, that's the winter blanket I'm upset to be missing. Snow insulates plants and helps protect them from the drying effects of cold winds. Unless I get some snow before the next really cold (low single Fahrenheit digits, or lower) day, my perennial herbs, while they will not be killed, will likely be damaged. (and I'm out of both energy and things to cover any more plants this season.)

It's been absolutely perfect here the last couple of days! I've been able to install a new storm door (the old one was actually blown off...er broken from our massive wind) and now with the nice warm, sunny day, I'll be able to caulk it in and paint the trim! Like a Star @ heaven

Sporadic flurries here, but nothing major is in the forecast, so far.

Although about a foot of the previous accumulation has melted, the 2' - 4' that remains--especially the berms--appear to be frozen solid.  I can't risk trying to get into the side yard to inspect my caneberries and apple trees.

Bracing for one more rainy front to arrive. We had a thunderstorm with strong winds yesterday. Still looking for one of my gardening gloves! I had to trim the tall, spreading snow peas to save their PVC trellis. They will grow back.

LOL re your solar powered brain CC.

The big snow storm that we were supposed to get yesterday was a fizzle. All the school kids got a day off for no reason. The next few days are going to bring temps around the freezing mark with a chance of flurries.

Our 10-day forecast shows 8 more days of rain, starting tomorrow night. The water course goes right through my sfg and is already eroding the back corner. It's been 5 days since the last rain and it's still muddy back there. I am NOT a happy camper. Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

There's a winter weather advisory here in Central Oregon.  Snow forecasts vary, but we'll probably get anywhere from 4" - 6" up to around a foot within the next week r so.

There's still plenty of snow on the ground from the December/January storms.

Our weather went from wonderful to horrible in a matter of hours...typical Colorado...
We don't have much snow to speak of here on the front range, but we've been schlacked over with ice No

Ottawa ... sunny and cold right now. Current temp is 4F (-16C) and with the wind it feels like -8F (-22C). High later today will be 23F (-5C) with snow flurries. A lot more winter yet to come.

The Winterlude Festival starts tomorrow. Come and skate on the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world also known as the Rideau Canal ... a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The neat thing about this Forum is that we are scattered everywhere, all with different weather.  Why do we care about the weather?  We're gardeners! Very Happy

PS The cat has the right idea. There isn't anything that can't be fixed with a good nap.

Last night was the worst storm we've seen in 20 years. Woke me up twice. Driving rain. Pounding winds. Even some hail. YIKES! affraid Better this morning. No visible damage. We still have 5 days of rain, then it looks like spring will be here for us. sunny

Got a break in the weather and checked everything out. Both the butterfly/greenhouse and the "Salad Bar" sfg have new water courses flowing through and lots of silt deposits. It must have rained over 2" in a very short period of time. On the covered deck, there are ceramic containers with 2" of standing water in them. That means 2" of rain blew in, since they are 2' back from any direct rainfall. Shocked The weatherman is predicting "significant" rainfall over the next 4 days, so I guess I'll be camping out on this thread. Rolling Eyes
