Wow, that's crazy.  Your hot weather veggies must be in their glory.
Mine are all wilted from being wind blown for too long.  Sad

Another beautiful sunny mid 70's day here today. Very Happy

Yesterday afternoon we got our thunderstorm to signal the end of the hot weather. It turned out to be more than a thunderstorm ... I've heard the term microburst being used. In some parts of the city it downed trees and tore roofs off buildings. One woman was critically injured when a tree fell on her. Some people are still without power this morning and four schools are closed in that area. We did not get the worst of it at our place but still I thought my mini-greenhouse was going to be torn apart and the mega-trellis with its Canada Crooknecks looked vulnerable.

TD-- thats a lot of activity.  My weather down here overnight  slid down about 35-40 degrees without any storms. Weird strange luck. I'm happily sipping coffee on the deck with a morning relief of 60 degrees.

That was quite a micro-burst! I hope the woman that was critically hurt is okay?

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?

Post  BeetlesPerSqFt on 10/1/2017, 10:35 am

Last night was not as originally forecast. The low was forecast at 40*F. It was 28*F outside this morning and there was frost -- no watch or warning, I checked before bed! Mad I'm salvaging what I can. I'm hoping the winter squash are ok. I know the trombocinos aren't because they weren't mature yet and they have little spots of damage already. I don't know if I can still get the rest of my dry bean harvest - I've been grabbing handfuls over the past week, but there were still beans out there that were more leathery than crispy.

I went out this morning and now have bowls of icy tomatoes to quickly turn into sauce (for the freezer, not canning.) Not what I had planned today. I won't know for sure what got hit too hard and what didn't until later.

Not sure what to do with the poblanos...can I still dehydrate "thawed" ones?

What a bummer Beetles, sorry to hear that. I had just the opposite, given a frost warning but didn't get any frost. I covered everything and prepared for a freeze, but it never made it to the frost.

Big frost here overnight as well. When I went to my car around 7:00 a.m. I found that the heavy night dew that settles on top of the vehicle had turned into a frozen mass of ice. We have been away since 8:30 this morning just returning at 4 pm, so have not had a chance to do a good inspection of the veggies. I'm hoping my Canada Crookneck Squash survived.

Perfect temps here, but we've had wind for several days so I haven't been able to rake any more leaves. Luckily there's no shortage of them. Rolling Eyes

Nice sunny day with a current temp of 66F going up to 72F. Perfect day for me to trim the cedar hedges around our yard. But I feel like I am getting too old for this especially when I have to go up a step ladder to trim the tops of the hedges. I'll probably only get a third of it done today.

Can you chop those hedges down to size to make them do-able from terra firma in the future?

The problem with these cedar hedges is that they only have green material on the last few inches of each branch. If you cut them back too far then it produces a big ugly scar. Sometimes and over a long period of time they will fill in but often they just keep looking ugly.

BTW I trim my hedges every year. The reason for this is that for every year they are not trimmed it takes the same length of time for them to return to a state that looks really good. So a hedge that is not trimmed for three years will take three years minimum to recover after it is trimmed back. These hedges get ugly real fast if they are not trimmed regularly.  Some in my neighborhood have not been cared for and they have turned into an unsightly mess of cedar trees rather than a nice privacy hedge!

For about $400 Cdn I could have someone come in to trim the hedges. One other thing is that I have been doing this trimming for 30 years but when I started the hedges were quite a bit shorter and not as wide across.  Or is it me that has become shorter and wider across?

Just found out that the woman has died. She was injured by the falling tree outside the Ottawa Hospital. She was 37 years of age. After surviving two kidney transplants earlier in her life she became an advocate and researcher for organ transplants.

No seasonal temps here.  We keep whipsawing with the jet stream, 10 degrees below average and marine layer mist till noon for five days, then Santa Ana winds 15 degrees above average with furnace winds and 10% humidity.

Actually, that's kind of typical for October here.

Yes, CN, SNOW!

Mt. Bachelor, 27 miles from my house, has a couple of feet on the ground.  About a foot fell in September, but most of it melted.
