Mid-Atl - Feb 2017 - Farmers' Almanac Winter 2016-2017

Post  sfg4uKim on 1/30/2017, 8:54 pm

The Farmers' Almanac predicted Ice Cold and Snow Filled, but it's been quite mild here in central Maryland with the exception of a few days.

What's going on where you live?

The weatherman just gave some statistics for the Baltimore, Maryland area for the month of January.

This is been the mildest January since 2006. We had 23 days with temperatures above normal and only 8 at or below normal.

More cold and snow here!

Oddly, the plows came through on my street yesterday evening, after having ignored the remaining snow and ice for weeks now.  Perhaps they know something....

The New Farmers' Almanac predicted cold and wet (i.e., snow) in the PNW this winter.

For your area, Kim, Joe Bastardi, meteorologist at Weatherbell, is expecting a spell of cold, stormy weather for your general area this month.

Although the lowest temperature has been about the same as near as I can tell relying on the internet (I don't have a outdoor recording thermometer...yet), it seems to have been a rather warm winter so far. I don't recall a winter with so little snow cover, so little of the time. Looking at various sites: For State College, PA (closest town with a weather record) the average snowfall is 40". It looks like we've only had 15" so far -- which isn't to say it's been dry, more that we've had rain when we'd normally be getting snow.

It look like it's forecast to be below 15*F tomorrow night, so I'll need to get the plastic back on the hoop houses and low tunnel. Below 15*F isn't surprising, but the number of times I've had to take the plastic off (anytime it's at or above 40*F and sunny) is.

I'm thinking the last frost date this year will be earlier than the average I've been using of May 11th. Not certain enough to risk my nightshades or melons, but I think I'm going to start my indoor brassicas a week or two sooner.
