Re: Carrot Week 2017!

Post  yolos on 2/8/2017, 9:23 pm

It is a little early for the real Carrot Week, but my carrot week started back in August.  I succession planted starting 8/21 and 9/3.  My first harvest was 11/25.  I have been harvesting a little bit at a time all winter.  I now have eight squares left which will be ready to harvest soon.

The first couple years I tried the Carrot week planting but it just gets too hot too quick here in GA and my carrots all turn out woody if planted during carrot week.  The only way I can grow carrots successfully is to plant them in the early fall and harvest throughout late fall, winter and early spring.

Here are 4 of the squares of carrots planted on 9/3.

My grandson will not eat cooked carrots so every weekend we go out to the garden and I let him harvest a few carrots and I cut them up and his mother puts them in his lunch every day.

So good luck to all who will be participating in Carrot Week 2017.

NO FAIR! I was all excited about posting pics of my little pinkie-size straggly carrots that overwintered so valiantly. Then along comes Yolos with her super models and has to show them off and make me cry. Sad

I really like this plan. I kinda sorta did that by accident last year with moderate success. This year I'll pay more attention and will hopefully have better results. thanks, yolos.

There won't be any carrots coming out of my SFG in April. Hopefully the snow will melt by then and I will at least be able to see my SFG beds.  Laughing

I have two 1' squares with top-hats that were planted late last summer.

Sufficient snow finally melted that I was able to tromp out to my garden (in snow boots) to inspect things.  The carrots look pretty good!

More will be planted in March or April, as soil and air temps allow.

I still want to see your small but mighty carrots.

Actually, I only plant the short, stubby ones anyway.  Embarassed Now that I've decided not to have any big or rambling plants in my "Salad Bar" sfg, I will have more room for carrots this year. They were an afterthought last year, but did well enough for an upgrade to the A list.

Same here with me in California.  I have to plant them in the fall and wait until spring to harvest.

CN,  I know what you mean about little carrots.  Each year I get better (they get bigger).  This is from my first year.

Now I get it! "Carrot Week" is for everyone else to plant and for us to show off our harvests. Talk about "diversity." WE GOT IT!  Razz

Here's my entry -- definitely room for improvement. Can anybody recommend the sweetest, fattest, easiest-to-grow carrot variety? These were crisp and crunchy, but not very sweet.

I have seeds for 6 different kinds of carrots....but that isn't one of them.  Guess who has to go looking now.  What's one more when you already have hundreds.

I wonder if either the Tulare/Kings or Fresno Master Gardeners (or one of the garden clubs) would consider hosting a seed exchange?

Post  Goosegirl on 2/20/2017, 3:53 pm

Well, I think I may be back!  I am definitely in on the Carrot Week 2017.  This year I will be converting 1 or 2 of my larger SFG boxes to permanent plantings of some indigenous perennial edibles and scaling back the annual planting.  That may make the yard more manageable with my health.  I currently have 154 sq ft plus some ratty and not-well-controlled flower beds.  Making sure I save at least a few sq ft, maybe more    just for carrots, may just keep me under control!
