Geesh, the way things are going I may have to plant my carrots under clam packs. Or in buckets so I can bring them in and out of the garage every day. Snowing to beat the band at the moment.

Here it's rain -- yet another 10 days of it. Carrots are being good sports about it, but not showing off at all, and I'm certainly not planting them any siblings in this weather. Sad

My seed order has arrived so, soil temperature willing, I am ready for Carrot week planting.

I will be growing Laguna, Bolero, Deep Purple and radishes to help with the thinning.

Here's half of my winter carrots.   Embarassed  Black aphids were decimating the garlic so I finished pulling everything from the bed. I guess I will be joining the rest of you for Carrot Month.

Okay, so I lied. Razz I read that I could lay down wood chips, then sprinkle the carrot seeds on top and water it down (I'm old school sfg, so still using dirt.) Anyway, I couldn't resist. If it ever stops raining and the stars are properly aligned, I may have carrot sprouts to report next week. geek

Some are also on my computer desk. Embarassed  Every time I walk buy, I eat one.  Just like the purple cauliflower.  We snacked on it until it disappeared.  Never made it to the steamer.

CN, Uh, carrot seeds take a while to germinate in this weather. Patience, little grasshopper.

You have no idea how totally out of patience I am right now. I could eat a tomato horn-worm I'm so frustrated with this weather.

Apparently it takes about 21 day minimum when the ground temp is below 55 oF at  2 " below the ground .

Cover the square with black plastic to pre heat the ground for four or so days  & when sown & lightly watered in put the plastic back on for a couple of days to get the magic 62 oF for a good germination  . Take it off & put a clear polythene wired tunnel over it closing both ends up at night & very soon you'll see the tiny spots of green looking gras blade poking through . a few days after they start to form the frond type leaf we all know so well . You can still use th tunnel for a we while but if you leave it on too long you just might dry the soil too much & end up with three inch orange nails .

Like nearly all crops the biggest secret for growing them is a continuous level of sufficient moisture .. Not too much & not too little ,  get that right & you'll have an amazing crop .

After watching the news last night and seeing what 14 million of us are going through with blizzards, hail, and threat of tornadoes, I am ashamed of this rant.  Embarassed I deserve to eat a tomato horn-worm.  Sad

Did someone say carrots? Yea I started early but they are growing. One self identifies as an onion and a couple are moving into uncharded territory. Stormed yesterday, lots of wind and the first real rain since I planted the garden.

RC,

I'm still laughing!

"Uncharded territory" -- LOL!

Self-identifies as an onion, ditto!  I find this particularly hilarious because I believe that A = A.
