slightly skeptical old guy in kansas

Post  ronbart on 2/11/2017, 8:38 am

Hello! I currently work as a nursery specialist at Lowe's. Over the years I have been a commercial bee keeper, worked on a mushroom farm, and spent 15 yrs as a production supervisor in a whole sale green house. My vegetable gardens consist of: 4 cinder block 4x8 raised beds, 2 4x12 raised asparagus beds, 2 beds containing blackberries, 1 grape arbor, gogi berries, and a 8x12 raised bed that I am in the process of constructing a cattle panel hoop house over. I also have numerous small planters containing perennial vegetables such as rhubarb, walking onions, etc. I have had the SFG book in my library since the 80's but at that time I had a much larger garden and kids. We grew things in larger amounts to can and freeze. I gave my tiller away this year and am converting to no till with drip irrigation. I found this site when I was researching worm towers for my beds and thought it contained a lot of information I could use even if I don't go 100% SFG. I often recommend SFG to my customers that have limited space or are just getting into gardening. From what I have read so far this site has a lot of friendly knowledgeable people and I look forward to learning from you.

Welcome ronbart from Ottawa, Canada.

Do you have the All New Square Foot Gardening Book? A lot has changed since the original book was published.

HI, ronbart. happy hi I'm also old school sfg.  glad you\'re here Can't wait to see photos of your gardens and containers. Sound a little bit like my setup. I also garden inside to keep things going all year round. geek

Hi, ronbart!

I too have done the old style SFG, now have a mix, a 4x4 All New, and some repurposed window boxes with MM.

I also have containers for melons, maters....

Would love to hear your plans!

Ronbart,  Welcome to the SFG Forum!  glad you\'re here   You have a lot of personal gardening experience.

I want to thank you for recommending All New Square Foot Gardening to your customers.  It truly is a great way for beginners to ease into gardening and is excellent for small yards.  [In 2013, I qualified for both.]  For older folks that no longer enjoy spending time on their knees, the SFG beds can be adapted to table top beds. When you recommend SFG, do you now also recommend this Forum?  We are so happy to help Newbies get started.  However, it is important that they read the updated version, All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd edition.  Most libraries have a copy if they don't want to buy it before trying the method.  However, it is a great reference and many of us have well marked / dog-eared copies. Very Happy

Thank you for the warm welcome. I will post some pictures when I can talk my wife into showing me how. Reading on the internet is about the extent of my computer knowledge. I am old school and only venture into modern technology when forced.  I have been reading a lot of older posts on the forums and have already picked up a few tidbits to use and am forming questions to ask. I appreciate how helpful people here are and I look forward to sharing ideas with you.

Give the ALL NEW SFG method a chance, you will truly be amazed at the production you achieve out of a square foot of garden.  Mel knew what he was doing!
