Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Many thanks for the welcomes. 81F is 27 C. And we have had more or less no rain for more than 4 weeks.
I grow my crops in a mosaic of crops. Probably more square yard than square foot.

Still munching on fresh asparagus. Even though I let the asparagus hedge start to grow last month, there are still new ones coming up here and there. If there's already one coming up from any one plant I'm eating the extras. I hope that's okay...?

I have no idea if that's okay, since I've never grown asparagus... it's on my list, though. I love asparagus.@CapeCoddess wrote:Still munching on fresh asparagus. But I do know it would be kind of amazing to still be getting some this late in the season around here.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Something new I decided to try this year in my gardening adventures... I had this 3lb lunker of a cabbage coming due for harvest, and decided this should be my weekend to learn how to ferment cabbage to make sauerkraut. *REAL* sauerkraut. Two hours from the garden into the fermenting jars. If you don't hear anything more about this, it'll be because it didn't end well.

Looks really interesting, Kate. If you have time maybe you wouldn't mind posting about your adventure in the sauerkraut thread? For instance, I'd love to hear about that thing on the top of your jars.

Yes, CK, I would love to hear about the Kraut Adventure!
CC, I really need to give some thought to an asparagus bed, I do love it!
I just made huevos rancheros with garlic scapes and a diced jalapeño from the garden! Yum!

Thanks for pointing me to the sauerkraut topic. There's been some good info posted there, and I will post on my little fermenting experiment there.

I envy your tomatoes, CK.
Today I ate some of one of my cabbages for lunch.
Dinner included the first zucchini, some mustard greens, parsley, and citrus basil.

In my house, it is butter, jalapeño, eggs, scrambled, cheese of convenience, and salsa and sour cream! and maybe a flour tortilla...but no tortillas most times. That would be a b fast wrap.@CitizenKate wrote:@Scorpio Rising wrote:Yes, CK, I would love to hear about the Kraut Adventure!

The mustard greens were scavenged from a square of bolting Pink Lettucy@Scorpio Rising wrote:Wow, I envy your earliness, too! What kind of mustard greens are they, Beetles? I have seeds! Red ones....@BeetlesPerSqFt wrote:I envy your tomatoes, CK.

All my mustards have bolted at this point and most don't have any usable leaves left; I've just been slow about cleaning up the spring veg to make way for whatever's next. Plus I've been taking advantage of the flowers attracting the cabbage butterflies so I can nab them. I probably won't be able to grow more mustard until mid to late August because it will be too hot.

That sounds really good, and I've got all the ingredients, including one of my Gigante Jalapeños to try out. It looks really good, but I'm afraid to just bite into it, so I think I'll make this my breakfast in the next couple of days.@Scorpio Rising wrote:

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Earlier today I posted on the " What won't you grow next year or are still trying to grow?? " thread that I would not grow Kholrabi again because it takes up a lot of space for little gain. After posting that I decided to take out a square of Kholrabi from one of my 4x4 SFG beds and use what I could for the evening meal.
Here is the Kholrabi in the SFG.

This is the only plant that produced a good bulb.

The other three were horrible. The split bulbs are only good for the compost bin but some of the leaves were OK.

I diced the good bulb and sliced the good leaves from all four plants into thin strips.

I sautéed the cubed Kholrabi together with thinly sliced white onion. After a few minutes I added in the sliced Kholrabi leaves and some orange bell pepper. After the leaves wilted I added in some thick cream and continued to heat the combination to reduce. I seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg. This recipe is from Martha Stewart except I added in the bell pepper. The cooked veggies were served with chicken.

Not bad for a salvage job! That looks delicious.
