Hi from Sequim (Western Washington)

Post  mashbug on 3/2/2017, 1:48 am

I also stumbled across this site looking for vermiculite.  I had purchased the SFG book a number of years ago, but was in an apartment at the time and the landlord did not look favorably on tenants killing the lawn to grow vegies.

I'm planning to build two boxes this year and see how it grows.  Wink  I usually have Sweet 100's growing in pots, and they will stay in the pots for now, but I'm looking forward to growing lots of beans, carrots, herbs, romaine, and summer squash.  Right now we have about 11 inches of snow accumulation on the ground, with another couple of storms headed our way over the next week or so.  I'm hoping spring gets here by April!

Looking forward to browsing this forum to see what everyone else is doing.  I found the vermiculite database, but there is no source on the Olympic Peninsula.  I do have some ideas, however, and will post to the database if I find a source in the area.

Mash,  Welcome to the Forum from California!  glad you\'re here  I stumbled across this Forum in Feb 2013, bought the updated version "All New Square Foot Gardening" and had 4 little beds planted by March.  Never looked back. Very Happy

Mashbug,

I believe there's a U-Line warehouse somewhere near Seattle.  Its extra-coarse grade of vermiculite is great!  There's a two-bag minimum for shipping, which does drive up the cost.  However, if it's near your location, you can call ahead and arrange a pick-up.

Hi Mashbug!

I'm in central Pennsylvania - I remember enjoying Sweet 100s, I tried mostly unsuccessfully to grow them on an apartment balcony. But by the time I switched to renting a house with garden-able space the seeds were apparently too old and I couldn't get more of that variety short notice. I'm growing Sweetie now, but once I get close to the end of the packet I want to get some Sweet 100 seeds again and do a comparison.

I hope you can find some vermiculite. I have some place comparatively close that offers it... sometimes. I ended up making a rather long trip last year mostly just for more (and the first place in that location had only fine vermiculite even after having confirmed on the phone that they had coarse!)

Hi Mashbug. Welcome from Atlanta, GA.

Do you have a Southern States gardening center (it's a franchise-type store apparently) in your area? It'll be listed as a local store vs. Southern States. I get pretty good prices from them.

Some Home Depot stores carry 4 cu. ft. medium grade vermiculite. Sometimes it's just plain hard to find coarse. I opened up the yellow pages and started calling and found 2 places that carried coarse!!
