1 zuke. They get huge. Not sure about other squash varieties.

1 winter squash: ANSFG book says a single winter squash needs 2 squares; the surface area of a 16" diameter pot is about the same as the surface area of 1.4 squares.

I put them on an end if I have a rectangle.  That way they can (and will) flow over!

Yellow crookneck summer squash. I know usually three to a mound but think I'll just do one and give them room in the pot. Thanks for the replies.

FWIW, I usually put 1 zucchini in 1.5 or 2 squares, on the outside so they can fall over. Their leaves get so big that they tend to kill whatever is next to them.

I thought about putting them in the raised bed but decided on pots to not use so much of my limited bed space. Maybe when the garden expands they can have a bed of their own.

Not a bad idea RC. My first time planting zucchini, I thought they were a vine and planted 1 in 2 squares...boy was I surprised when those 12" leaves just flopped down on whatever I had planted next to them. It could've easily overflowed 4 squares.
Since then, I have learned I can "train" them a bit and have tried to trellis them, but mainly I just direct them to lay over the side of the bed.
