Hi From Cincinnati

Post  BongoSTL on 3/14/2017, 5:26 pm

Hi From Cincinnati, OH!

I'm just starting my first summer sfg, but am very excited.

I built 2 8x8 planters with an E/W 1Ft walkway through the middle for access...

I'll post in the other section, but I'd love any thoughts that anyone has on my plans...so much fun figuring this all out!

Bongo,
Welcome from Coastal NC. This is a great forum for new gardeners.

As for any advice, a 1' walkway will probably be too narrow especially once the leaves start growing

Welcome from central Pennsylvania!
I have some 1 ft and 18" paths, and they really are awkward once things get growing. I'm widening one of them this spring in spite of the apparent loss of growing space because I don't have room to bend over easily. The growing space isn't useful if I can't properly tend the plants in it. I'd recommend 2 ft minimum. 30" works well, but it makes it hard to plan if you're splitting it out from an even number of feet, like 8ft, because then you have a half foot left over. I don't need to get a wheelbarrow or anything through the garden - or need room for anyone to pass me on the paths - so with the limited space I have to work with, I try to use less than the 3ft Mel recommended in the ANSFG (All New Square Foot Gardening Book).

Bongo, I welcomed you in another thread. I may have "met" you in another place?? If so, I discussed your plan.
