Wick Irrigation

Post  Maureen Gayle on 3/28/2017, 2:23 pm

Does anyone have experience or good ideas about using wick irrigation in my beds? After Googling, I see lots of plans for wick irrigation for containers, but I'd like to retrofit my flower beds and my SFG with a wick system. (This, after coming home to a dead and dying garden last summer after an extended vacation.) Thoughts?

Thanks from Seacoast New Hampshire!

Hi Maureen!   glad you\'re here
There have been at least a couple of folks who have built wicking SFGs but I can't remember who they are or what thread their instructions and photos are in.

Hopefully someone with a better memory and can point you in the right direction.
What a Face

A few threads came up when I used the search box with "wicking SFG". Here's one to start with!

Maureen, Welcome to the Forum from hot-summer California! I have drip irrigation on auto timers. I couldn't leave for more than 36 hours if I didn't! Shocked Hope you find what you need regarding wicking beds.

My Wick Project

Post  MooneyG on 8/4/2017, 2:36 pm

So! I have 2 SFGs and I decided to experiment with wick irrigation. I created a Frankenstein monster of a reservoir, but I included a top-up access point so I could easily refill it with a hose. It's halfway through the summer now and the bed seems very healthy with little or no extra watering from me. I'm going to try to post pics but I'm finding this a little tricky.

It was Kay Walshevak who put in the wicking gardens.  This thread is about putting htem in, but she later talked about the upkeep, pros and cons, I think I recall.
