Proof of Spring with Asparagus

Post  llama momma on 4/3/2017, 3:09 pm

Finally got the first two that are decent size.  Soil temperature has reached 50 or more degrees.  Variety is called Purple Passion.

I've had four Jersey Knights break ground, so far.  Unfortunately, I forgot to cover them the other night, and I think at least two of them are frozen to death.

23F yesterday morning, 17F today.

Even in Hawaii!!

From Rosina:
Some of you might remember how I had to fight to get asparagus starts because the supplier knew they would not grow in Hawaii.  Pretty good eh?

No asparagus for me yet in Canada. I am hoping for a good haul this year though. Should I cover them? I had leaves on top, which I just took off to give them enough light. We have frost until mid-May though. I can't remember when my asparagus started to pesk through last year.

Cover whenever there's a likelihood of frost.

Beautiful spears. The diameter of mine range from very thick to very thin.  Have no idea how to control that. ..

OK will do. They aren't coming up yet though. I assume that you mean once they're up, right?

Right.

Meanwhile, I'm hoping to salvage a few spears for Easter dinner.

Nice. I think I will plant more asparagus this year. It is so great to have it coming up year after year.
