Hello from Southwestern Virginia

Post  lagjeg on 5/14/2017, 8:24 pm

Hi everyone.
My family and I are new to gardening. I suppose I've grown a tomato plant and some beans a few times, but I don't really count that towards any experience Wink . I had no idea what I was doing. I still don't, actually, but at least I've done some research and feel a bit more prepared.

I started some container gardening several weeks ago, mainly because I didn't want to dig up my backyard. Containers are going great, or at least some of them look good at the moment. Then, I stumbled on "The Book" at my local library and learned a bit about square foot gardening. That was a game changer for me!!

I found an awesome FB page for SQGers, asked a question, and some wonderful person directed me to this page.

Anyhow, I'm excited to start this. We got all of our wood today (except what was needed to make a wire cover to keep some animals out. And we drove to at least 6 places looking for all the pieces for Mel's Mix. Still having a difficult time with the compost, but its coming together.

I really have no idea what should be planted with what. We are just going to wing it with a few corn squares, cantaloupe, zucchini, cucumber, brussel sprouts, and I think some green onions. Hoping those won't be too bad together. Trial and Error and hopefully we'll figure it out.

Anyhow, glad I found this little place. Its going to come in handy.

Trellis as many veggies as you can to save room (ie cantaloupe and cucumber).  You have both warm weather veggies and cool weather veggies in your list.  Warm weather are corn, cantaloupe, zucchini and cucumber.  Brussel Sprouts and green onions (I think) are cool weather veggies and probably won't grow in the summer in VA unless you are up in the mountains.

If you are only growing a few squares of corn, you may have to do some hand pollination.  Corn is mostly pollinated by the wind blowing the pollen from the tassels to the silks of the ear of corn.  With just a couple squares, the wind might blow the pollen away from the other plants.
