Garden across the street.

Post  MrBooker on 5/15/2017, 7:27 am

They're at it again. They had 13 rows of corn planted but it flooded out a few weeks ago so they're replanting. Notice how far apart the rows are. When I asked them why so far apart, they said, "So we can get the riding mower between them".  rofl   Yes, these guys actually MOW their garden.

I will be posting monthly pics of their garden throughout the summer. By late fall, I won't be able to see the buildings in the background for the weeds..... Notice everyone in the pic has a beer except the guy planting.

Looks like a good group of guys having some fun getting out and gardening! Good for them! Anxious to see the plot of corn.
I enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning, and an ice cold beer in the afternoon and evening in the garden

Mr. Booker, Please post the photo of this lot that you previously posted, so folks know where this thread is headed.

Rooster, I've always heard that a cold one goes better with SFG than row gardening? Wink

When I did traditional gardening, about 12 years ago or so, I would start out all hung ho.  No root-tiller, so my bed never looked that pristine, but it was close.

I was Rodale organic and had a compost pile.  My corn wasn't that far apart.  Maybe a foot?  I hand hoed.  HOWeVER, by mid- July, I was over it.  The bugs, weeds, weeds, and did I say weeds?  It was like walking into Guns N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" theme song....yuk!

Haha!  I bet that is what these guys are gonna get into!  All nice and pretty.  Unless they are into pre-emerge (Preen, etc.) it will get Uglay!

I approve of mowing growth between the rows in a garden. It conserves water and adds green manure and cuts down the mud when walking the rows. I used to do it intentionally, I would seed annual rye and then mow it periodically. BUt I planted wide rows so the row was as wide as the path.

How much corn do they get from their plot?

I edge and mow the grass between the boxes in my garden. It sure is a lot easier than pulling weeds, and mulching, and cursing that the weeds are coming up again through the mulch treadmill... etc.

Lol Camprin I also mow weed wack and trim and mulch my boxes but the majority of them are 15 or so years old so I also fight weeds.  Whats great about the steamy south is is is very very vibrant and stuff grows and grows.  Thats what is bad about it too.  Two of my friends in town row garden and work and sweat and it takes em 4 times the footage to make the same yield One of them is young and energetic ad goes full blast 24-7, He grins at me saying Cap I got the time and love old school so I dont mind.  The other one is my age stubborn and set in his ways and says he aint gonna change.  Our yard is small and I aint got room for half an acre of tilled dirt I also have fruit and nut trees along with my boxes.  For me the first garden I made at this house was a box and I am too old to go changing and set i my ways so I still garden by the foot kinda sorta but not all the way to the book of Mel.

PS
I am weed wacking today

Sounds like enough corn for them to eat all they want fresh and freeze a bit. Good on em.
It reminds me of the movie 'Second hand Lions'

That's one of our favorites. We owned it on VHS, but no longer have it since migrating to DVD. We never see it on DirecTV, but if it ever comes around again, we're on it! Cool

In defense of weeds: When we lived in Oregon, I tried to grow strawberries. I weeded, diligently, and the slugs got every single berry. Finally I gave up and let them go. The weeds grew up, protected the fruit from the slugs, and I got a nice juicy harvest. Razz

I remember that!

Yeah...it is just what it is....mowing between rows.  No.  All the weeds eagerly eating up the good stuff.  Yes.

Still, for me it was a frustrating endeavor.  Hence, SFG!!!!!!!!bouncecheers
