Hello from Toronto, Ontario

Post  capelas on 5/19/2017, 11:07 am

Hello all.

Just ordered my book and super excited to start a garden with my daughter.
Building and hopefully filling 2-4X4X6" beds this weekend.
Maybe this way she will finally start eating her veggies. LOL

Hi capelas and a warm welcome from Ottawa, Ontario.  That is very exciting that you are getting into SFG with your daughter.  Two of my grandkids started 3x3 SFG beds this year. I think you are doing the right things starting with two beds rather than trying to do too much your first year. There is a ton of information on this forum and many friendly, helpful people.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and please post photos of your progress.

Here is what I did my first year which I hope will help you.

Capelas, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here Your Region Hostess, Kelejan, will be along shortly to also welcome you. TD (Trolleydriver) has been hooked by SFG since his first bed and has gathered a lot of experience growing in eastern Canada. Very Happy

Welcome to the world of fun gardening from the *other* CA - CANADA!

To be honest, I'm originally from Illinois, but got lost one day while wandering.

I started SFG about 6 years ago and absolutely fell in love.

One thing you'll definitely want is a notebook and perhaps a digital camera for when you gets started.  (Until you have a bit of experience under your belt, all sprouts look like weeds and you want to make sure what is growing is what you want before it gets too late.)  I find it easier to take pictures of the sprouts of the things I *want* and use the notebook to make notes on the growing season - what worked, what didn't and what I want to try next year.

Ha! I'm just the opposite of SwampTroll. I was planted and sprouted in St. Catharines and then transplanted to the US.

Welcome to the forum, Capelas! SFG is an amazingly fun journey. Lots of experimenting makes it so interesting. There are ups and downs but don't worry about it. Carry on Canada!

It's interesting that CC and I have a connection with St.Catharines, Ontario. My family moved there from England when I was ten years old. I still have family (sister-in-law, cousins and their families) living there. Sure wish I could move that St.Catharines' "banana belt" climate up here to Ottawa.
