Hi from Seattle

Post  Madrona on 5/15/2010, 1:48 pm

... well actually a suburb of Seattle. But close enough. Wink

My husband is out clearing the space to build three 4x6 square foot gardens. His mom gave us 28(!) tomato and pepper starts, and we needed somewhere to put them. I don't know what we'll do with the rest of the squares, but I'm sure we'll figure out something. Wink

I'm so glad to see this forum!

Like box seats when the Mariners play the Yankees, they fill up fast.

Welcome Madrona. Which suburb are you gardening in? I'm on the edge of Everett and Mukilteo.

We're in Bellevue. We just moved in 3 weeks ago ... so we're getting a bit of a late start gardening-wise. Our house was bank-owned, unfinished new construction, so of course the landscaping was saved until the end and never got done. The house sat empty for 2 summers... you can imagine what the blackberries, ivy, etc. have done in that time. We have much more clover than we do grass, etc. Anyway. There is room for 3 beds right outside our living room window. Can't wait to get 'em going. Smile

I need to figure out some sort of automated watering system... any tips on where to go for that? I'd prefer a local source, but would order online if I needed to.

You are not at all late for gardening in Seattle. In fact you are just a tad early for tomatoes. So you have time to get your boxes built and filled with mix.

Right now I am watering with a hose, so I'm not the best person to talk to about auto-water. Lowe's or Home Depo might be the place to go if you want to do your own labor.

Bellevue is full of artisans. It should be easy to find what you are looking for. Walk the dog, meet and greet, and ask the neighbors were they got theirs.

Deborah ....to an abundance of pizza margarita (hey! plant basil) and juicy sandwiches!

A trip to Home Depot solved my watering quandry. We picked up a bunch of parts-n-pieces for a drip irrigation system from DIG ... hopefully that'll do it. Anyway, we probably won't have the thing fully together until the 1st weekend in June, but I'll post up some pics when we get it done.

Welcome! I grew up in the PNW - Bellevue to be exact - and my mother still lives there! We grew lots of tomatoes growing up so I am sure you will have success. There are a lot of folks on the forums from the PNW and I am sure they can give you lots of advice about what and when to plant.
