Today's Harvest

Post  sanderson on 6/24/2017, 3:36 pm

I know some of you have great harvests so I thought I would start this thread.  Here's my little harvest today, the 6th day of over 100*F.  I never would have thought I could get overwhelmed with Muncher cucumbers!  There are still 6 in the refrig.  The 2 at the top of the photo have deformatives.

In this heat, these could have been worse.

I too am amazed! Your harvest looks great, Sanderson. I got a carrot, a radish, and my first asparagus bean. I am thrilled to have anything out there still alive and producing. sunny

This heat is brutal. Any little veggie is a treasure.

Congrats.  Muncher used to be my favorite cucumber but I have switched my loyalty to Baby Persian cucumber.

Are either one of those heirloom or are they both hybrid?

Nice, sanderson !

I harvested the last of the lettuces, the Tokyo Cross turnips, sugar snap peas, 2 early jalapeño and 2 sweet banana peppers, Daikon pods (love), Swiss Chard, and a few curly endive leaves.  I can't get the pics to upload since I got this new iPad....

Muncher is sold by Baker Creek and I think they only sell Heilooms.??)  The attached link does not say.  And I have 4 different packs of Muncher seeds from 4 different vendors and none of the packs say Heirloom so I doubt they are.

Baby Persian is a hybrid

I wondered why everything looked so sad when I watered this evening, then I checked Weather Underground. IT WAS 118 HERE TODAY!

Yolos, Baker sells both Heirlooms (older varieties) and more modern varieties. The catalog states that they don't sell hybrids or patented seeds. So we are free to save the seeds for future crops.

CN, I heard your scream all the way down here. Wink

CC, Muncher is not an older heirloom but it is a stable variety, so you can collect the seeds.

I got that number from Weather Underground and they're standing by it, but our local news says it was "only" 113 and didn't even break the record, so you can ignore my scream. Embarassed

Today's harvest.  All of the tomatoes will be processed bounce except the 3 larger "Boys" on the right.  Opps, I see I forgot to put the red bell and poblamo with the other 3 peppers on the right. This is the first year I have had grocery store-sized bell peppers.

Tomato varieties. right to left.  "Boy" varieties, Snow Fairy, Black Vernissage, Roma, Sun Gold and Sweet 100's.  As you can see, the Sweet 100's are only pea size and I won't grow them again.

Best tomato year since I started SFG in the summer of 2013. I have been prepping and freezing in gallon zip lock bags for when I do the tomato canning and sauce freezing.

Looking good everyone! I too love all those tomatoes!

Here's what I nabbed today. One cucumber, two tomatoes (still need a couple of days on the counter) and two eggplants. Going to BBQ some burgers and the eggplants and make baba ganoush again, and will have the cucumber on the side. The baba ganoush will be a dip for fries. I tried the cucumber already and it was delightfully sweet!

Thanks Scorpio! I artfully placed the tomatoes so you cannot see the BER on them, haha.
