Re: Today's Harvest

Post  littlejo on 11/8/2017, 7:41 pm

I picked a 5 gal. bucket of mustard greens today. Had a time getting enough room to plant any winter veggies for the summer plants still going strong! Peppers, eggplant, okra, sweet pot., lima beans, zucchini, ginger(in a large pot) cukes, 1 acorn squash on, don't know if it will ripen or not.

I planted mustard(for the nematodes) in between the other veggies. I planted broccoli, cabbage, collards, turnips, peas, potatoes, spinach and lettuce. Carrots will go in soon. My spinach won't sprout and it's new seed. I put the garlic around plants that deer like to eat in winter. Especially the star magnolia  and camellia , which have buds all winter and bloom in the last weeks of winter. The camellia keeps it's leaves while the star magnolia loses leaves but has buds all winter. Deer love it!
Sorta got off topic, sorry

+1 to that! Summer-vegetable-wise I just have a pepper in a 7-gallon bucket that I haven't given up on and keep moving in and out of the garage. And a pair of weird South American nightshade fruit bushes in an Earthbox that are getting anemic and lanky in the laundry room.

I wish I'd done a better job of getting my mustards in. For eating; I don't think I have nematodes.

Yesterday I harvested my first Brussels sprouts of the year, and pulled the remaining ball carrots out of the planter on the deck (too cold/unprotected to leave them much longer.) I ate them tonight, along with some of my summer leeks (varieties that won't overwinter) previously harvested and stashed in the garage.

I’m out.  I just mowed (hopefully for the last time!).   The only thing alive out there is 3 Swiss chard plants.  Peppers are dead, need to get them out this weekend.  So with the big cold front, my chard’s days are numbered...

Re: Today's Harvest

Post  countrynaturals on 11/17/2017, 6:10 pm

This is a huge milestone for me. I've been wanting to use the word "bountiful" for 2 years. Today, for the first time ever, I can say it out loud. I HAVE A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST and I still have more in the garden. I did not pick any kale, pattypan, or the tromboncino and there's still a chance my cherry tomatoes and tomatillos will ripen. I also have more lemon cukes and Armenian cukes that may have a prayer, although our nights are flirting with the 30s already. Anyway, here it is in all its glory. (Next year I'll probably laugh at this year's definition of "bountiful" but today I'm celebrating.) smiles

I can now do a hot pepper sauce!  Fresno, Cayenne, and Jalapenos! Or is it Jalapenos, Cayenne, and Fresno?  It will all get mixed. Very Happy
