CANADIAN REGION: What are you doing in August 2017?

Post  Kelejan on 8/1/2017, 10:53 am

Still very hot here in British Columbia Southern Region.  I hope others in Canada are coping with the heat, rain, or whatever Mother Nature throws at us.

We here in this region will expect 39C/100F this week.  So far we only have water restrictions due to our capacity so that we have to even out the flow.  Even numbered days like me and odd number days for the other half.  At lest we have sufficient water so we are very lucky.

Looking out of my kitchen window I notice that the smoke from the Interior fires has reached us.  Up until yesterday everything was clear and bright.  The weather forecast also indicates that the smoke from our Interior fires will reach Vancouver today.  I think that is what we are now sharing.  People must now be careful not to do too much excercise and breath in this air.  Take care everyone.

No water restrictions here, but we also have heat and smoke from nearby fires. Not too bad today. We can see blue sky, but yesterday it was all hazy. Sad

Tonight we had an angry red sunset.  This is what others have had for some time now.

I had to post this photo of a waterlily flower in our goldfish pond.  It brightened my day and I hope it does the same for you.

Today I checked the weather forecast and tomorrow I saw a little symbol that represented a cloud.  A CLOUD.  It reads 30% chance of rain.

I bet that cloud by-passes us.  Never mind, some place  else will get it that deserves it more.

Other wise no change in the hot and dry for the next seven days.

I must admit I am getting most of my veggies from the farmers' market.  We have a very tiny market and one has to get there early to get the peas and carrots.

On Wednesday three of us went to the next city of Nelson and their market is ten times the size of ours so all of us were able to stock up with all the veggies we needed.  All quality stuff and far superior than our local supermarkets and we know we are supporting local growers.

Sow outdoors or plant out:
Lettuce (Leaf)
Radish
Spinach
Swiss Chard

This morning I was actually able to work in the garden for an hour, trimming plants that were past their prime and tidying some of the scruffy places and starting on preparing a bed for fall planting.

Slightly cooler today, perhaps because of the smoke still hanging around although we have really got off lightly compared with the Mid-Interior and the Vancouver ares. Yesterday we had some light cloud and  one could see blue sky.

I hope to continue doing some more work this evening when it gets cooler once more.  this is when I really notice the light fading earlier each evening.

Me, too. The cucumber bed is now shaded by the South neighbor's trees.

Mrs TD and I are visiting our daughter and family in Southern Ontario. Tonight we went to Camp 31 for yummy BBQ ribs. We sat out on the restaurant's patio during a tornado warning. We finished the meal before the storm hit. Then son-in-law and I went storm chasing for a couple of hours. Crazy or what? We got into some brutal rain and I don't recall ever seeing such continuous lightning for such a long time. There have been reports if damage but no confirmed tornado (yet).

TD: I saw the weather forecast for your area tonight it it really does look horrendous.

We should be getting some rain Saturday or Sunday and I hope it will be enough to give us all a good soaking.  Even the people who water their lawns every day are beginning to have some "golden" patches.  Mine is mostly gold with a few patches of green.  A good drop of rain and it will turn green in a couple of weeks then I will have to start mowing again.

Looks like there were two small tornadoes spotted.  One was just 25 miles Northwest of our daughter's place. There was damage to power lines and solar panels.

Yep.  Check one off your bucket list.   Very Happy I actually think it sounds a little exciting, but don't tell anyone.

Re: CANADIAN REGION: What are you doing in August 2017?

Post  Kelejan on 8/14/2017, 1:25 am

Today, Sunday, I woke up to rain.  Such a welcome site.  It cooled the air and by afternoon I could see blue sky and clouds instead of a smokey haze that flattened everything.  It lasted about three hours so I doubt it did more than freshened all the leaves on the trees.

In any case I went out in the rain and picked up three grocery bags of small apples that had fallen from my one apple tree and that had landed on my neighbours' driveway. I expect they were happy to see a clear driveway when they returned home this evening.
I have to do this every year otherwise they never pick up in spite of these apples being an attractant for the bears that end up being shot.

More showers forecast for tomorrow morning.

I love the rain that we've been getting.  Now I just need some genuine heat for my peppers.   My jalapenos and poblanos seem to be okay, but my purple peppers aren't setting properly.
