Hawks and weasels and bears oh my!

Post  bigdogrock on Sat 2 Sep 2017 - 18:15

Mother Nature has a way of humbling folks. Last year the hawks were scaring our chickens, it was frustrating to see them stay in the run so much. In April a tiny erman took out our whole flock, I thought the coop was erman proof, I still don't know how it got in. Then Thursday, a bear shredded half inch hardware cloth like it was paper. The wooden stick in the middle is a yard stick to show size.

10 out of 19 chickens are gone, mostly piles of feathers. Two of the remaining 9 are not in good shape. My entire family has been devastated, to say it was a shock to see what one bear could do is an understatement.

I spent big bucks today to put an electric fence around them. If something touches this one, it will light up like a Christmas tree.

Just an ironic note, I had chosen not to hunt bear this year.

This morning I purchased my bear tag. I will be inviting one to dinner...

Oh Rock, I'm so sorry. How traumatic for everyone. And the size of that rip is super scary!   pale
Kudos for taking action and putting up that fence right away .
okay
I remember when camprn put up an electric fence to keep the bears away from her beehives. I don't think she's had any trouble since.

Wow, that would scare the heck out of me! I'm trying to imagine the force it would take to rip hardware cloth like that. I'm so sorry for your chickens. It must be hard to lose them to predators that way.
