A great offer for a local SFG,er

Post  jimmy cee on 10/14/2017, 7:29 pm

I am dismantling my entire SFG garden consisting of three 4 X 10 and two 4 X 4 beds.
All beds have decking boards for flooring,  in 3rd season so it will still be intact.
All beds are elevated, one has a small 2 x 4 I was using for a cold frame
I also have some finished compost that will go with it, along with covers for the beds during winter. If your close and love to garden SFG mode, do not pass this up.
I am estimating original cost of between $2,000 and 3,000..
Just about all have been constructed with the newer treated lumber.
This will start to come apart on Monday. 10/16/17..
I live in Indiana Pa, in the center of town. Easily available, will need at least a good size pick up. a small dump truck would be better.

Approximately 160 cubic feet of Mels Mix tried and perfected is also available...
This is free, no charge for the first person on the spot to remove / help dismantle.

Leave a message as I will return call promptly....
This is being done and will be accomplished the week of October 15. in order to sell this house.

Wow, Jimmy!  That is a great deal for a gardener to get some wonderful beds and MM and, well, just everything.

Hope you get lots of bites!  Did you put anything in the local paper?

Hi Sanderson.
I will be starting to tear  it apart in the morning, I'm not waiting. To bad because this was an immediate decision. A decision was made when folks buy a house they usual like to plan for them selves. I agree with that, just a rare case if anyone really wanted it.
I don't feel bad about tearing it out, thos beds were a big part of me for the past 10 years, however so was my wife...A new life is waiting for me, it may not include gardening as I knew it. I may concentrate oh herbs and all their glory.
!/2 mile from where I'll be living is a great produce specialty shop with unbelievable prices.
Who knows, in any event, I'll be back....

What a beautiful home it will be!  I love the grey siding with the white trim - so clean and crisp looking.

Forget the above offer. I started removing it today and find most not worth the effort.
My intentions were good, should have thought a bit more, maybe others did.
If I start any other beds, they will be premaid metal type, I'll elevate as needed.
I love the elevated style.
As mentioned before my first task will be composting piles

The offer is still standing for the Mel's Mix.
I am piling it up and hopefully someone local will get it.
This bed had 12 inches of MM

Yes, When elevating my beds I just let the original in place and went over top with cross pieces. It worked out great.
In dismantleing / removing these beds I've possibly developed an idea that may end concern about what type of wood to use.
When I laid down the planking for the beds I put down a high quality weed barrier, 2 layers, when emoving them I found the material to be about like original, even though all that weight was pushing down into 3/8 inch spacing cracks in the floor.
Weed barrier had excellent drainage for I tried flooding beds before filling with Mel's Mix.
Think about this.....supporting wire, gradually downsizing to a finer mesh for against the weed barier...Could start off with cattle panel, gradually working down in mesh size.
Weed barrier could make up sides and floor to contain MM. Whta I am trying to say is, weed barrier is strong enough to hold MM in a bed and supported by proper means could possibly mean an end to using treated lumber and such...
I have done this making simple round baskets for potato containers.
Give it some thought...I will once I get settled...

There is a lot on the web about making beds with just hardware cloth and weed barrier for the bottom.  Most of the examples are making small salad tables but the same principal would apply to a larger bed if you had enough supports holding up the hardware cloth.

Jimmy, This is just my personal experience. I tried commercial weed fabric for lining a wire potato cage and hanging flower baskets, but the Mix dried out too easily. Of course, I live in a hot, dry summer zone. I use 2" x X" lumber which helps maintain moisture and adds a cooling thickness of insulation. Now, for those that live in areas with higher humidity and frequent rains, it could work.
