Composting Schefflera yes or no?

Post  No_Such_Reality on 10/31/2017, 10:01 am

i have schefflera in my yard.  Unlike the nice houseplant found in many homes north of Zone 10, I have Jurassic Park trees destroying my patio and in general making primordial forest mess.  They shed as trees, flower pods, leaves and stems which will be two feet long thick and hard when dry.  Enough mess that they half fill if not more my 96 gallon green waste bin every week.

That's a lot of deep nutrients leaving my yard.  It's a pain to shred because they're cumbersome to feed, but it can be done.

I do know you can't burn schefflera because like some other wood species, it'll make you sick due to oxalates in the wood.  Sap can be a skin and eye irritant and the plant will make your dog or cat sick if they ingest or chew it.

So the question is, can I compost it?

I think composting "toxic" plants is okay. I mentioned Cana Lily leaves and someone said they were okay to compost. ???

Sanderson, do you mean Calla Lily, aka Peace Lily or Canna Lily.

The first is toxic when ingested, the second isn't.

But thanks, your post gave me the mental nudge to do the right google search to get my  answer.

Rhubarb has the same toxins as my trees.  Safe to compost.
