CANADIAN REGION: What are you doing in December 2017

Post  Kelejan on 12/1/2017, 9:19 am

Well, the last month of 2017.  Countdown to the Winter Solstice and then we will start the slow climb to the Summer Solstice. Winter Solstice is the day I celebrate in my mind as I know that daylight will oncrease.

What am I doing right now?  Just checking the two small trays I have of Red Radish and realising that I have not put enough seeds in the trays.  I will do that next time.
then I will place them under the AroGarden lights and start another trays.

I also intend to start my winter seedlings in the plastic drinks containers.  So far we have not had any days when the temperature is consistently below zero, so I will not water them or place them outside as I feel they would start sprouting and then get frozen.

So far, apart from some snow in early November we have had only mixed rain and snow.

Same here, it has been a fairly mild and snowless November!  I am OK with that!  But no expectations that this will continue!

Happy December!

I received my 158 page 2018 Vesey's Seeds this morning.  It smells fresh off the press.
Now to find my Christmas present to me.

Kelejan, I received my Vesys Seeds catalogue a few days ago but mine has 167 pages (168 if I count the back cover).

I did not have my specs on, TD so I read the inside back page as 157 instead of 168 so it is the same catalogue.

sanderson, I am thinking of a two-tier Space Saving Light Garden on page 123. so that I can grow some micro greens and then transition to some starts.

TD, I haven't yet made up my mind.  I have some measuring to do as I do not have much wall space in my small home.  I would like it in the kitchen or the living room so that I can have some of that nice light for the winter. It may mean that some heavy furniture will have to be moved left or right an inch or two. I would also worry that my house will not be warm enough for plants to thrive. A good reason that Pal, my cat, snuggles up to me when we watch TV or go to bed. Very Happy

Looking at the weather forecast this week, every temperature is either Zero or below.
That is Celsius for our American friends, so it is not as cold as all that.  So long as it is not windy.

Nice Christmas gift! Now that it is cold at night, I miss Sweetie the most. It was so comforting to feel her little heater.

Isn't it time to adopt somebody new that really needs a warm lap for winter? I love you

Not yet. It's nice to be able to take vacations without any one to worry about. When the time comes, it will be an older rescue cat over 10 years of age. I'm working on 70 years, after all. I will know when the time comes.

I would love to have a dog, but for the same reason as Sanderson we don't want to be tied down when it comes to travelling. We had dogs in the past and they did not like being with someone else while we were away. One of them barely ate anything when we were away. And not to be outdone by Sanderson I am working on my 71st year.  Very Happy

CC ... it's partly the cold, the dampness, the dreary grey skies but then there are the general aches and pains and less overall energy. Although, having said that I am probably in better shape now with all the gardening than I was when I was working and sitting at a desk most of the day and in a car commuting to/from the office. One thing I am definitely not looking forward to is shoveling snow or even going out to move it with the snowblower.

Suz ... thanks for the "earned it".

Not much happening in my part of Canada.  Could we perhaps tilt the Earth a bit so we can have an early spring?

No snow at the moment, except up in the mountains so that it is easy to get around on foot or by car.  I expect the snow will hit us next week when everyone is on the move.  It's Nature.

In my car port, seeing as I no longer have a car, I converted it by making a screen using one of my SFG upright frames, and placing it behind a row of cinder blocks with a raised bed on it.  It gave me more room behind to stash things like the garbage bin and blue  recycle bins.  Today a friend took me shopping, and instead of parking in the road like she usually does, she decided to back up.  You guessed it, she backed up too far and moved everything around.  Now I need some strong arms to help put it back together again.  Every thing is too heavy for me so I need to take it apart and rebuild it. Sad

What a difference a night makes in our weather forecast.  Now every day for a week it shows three snowflakes meaning flurries most days and sometimes a little more.  I do not think I will have to do much shovelling if I keep on top of it.

That's a very interesting idea, Kelejan.  I bet Elon Musk could come up with something...and probably will some day.  Then we could all move (back) to Canada once it's warmer.
What a Face
