What's going on in my SFG?

Post  Wild Bill on 5/17/2010, 9:23 am

First year at the SFG and using Mel's Mix.

Here's some snapshots of my plants.. not looking too good at all. The seeds sprout ok and get going, but then they start to turn a lighter green.. and then develop brown edges and some die off. Some of the plants seem to be growing ok.. like one of my lettuce plants... yet a lettuce plant right beside it is developing the same traits.

Do I have too rich of a soil? Not rich enough? Too much water?

I've grown plants in a regular garden and in earth boxes that I have made and they do great. Just wondering what I did wrong here. Maybe got some bad compost or something. I used Black Kow compost, Organic Humus, 2 types of Mushroom compost, another organic compost, and one other compost I don't remember at the moment. Of course the 1/3 parts of vermiculite and peat moss as well.

First shot is of the lettuce and sugar snap peas. Two of the peas have already died.

Next up are my green beans.

And here is some Borage. The outer leaves are turning yellow-green and tips are starting to brown.

I'm new to gardening, so I can't help you, but my Cucumber plants I bought from Home Depot seem to be doing the same thing. I'll be watching this tread.

Hubby says I can take the plants back to HD...will see

No idea specifically. Most sickly plants look the same to me, but it does look like some sort of nutrient deficiency rather than bugs or something - although I am no expert. So, since it is your first year, and it all depends on the quality of the compost, I would cheat a little and add some nutrients - broad spectrum - and see what happens in a week or so. Miracle grow for veggies or epsom salts, fish emulsion, blood and bone meal, more fresh compost - give them some help and let us know how it turns out.

That's what I was thinking.... and I have added a little bit of Espoma Bio-Tone Plus. I may add a little bit of something else.. since the bio-tone plus is mainly just a transplant booster.

I'll let people know the results.

My green beans were doing the same thing. I put bone meal around them and now they are doing great. So my thoughts are that you have a nitrogen problem in the soil. This is just a guess as I am a first time gardner this year but your beans look alot like mine did before the bone meal.

Why is it cheating to assess what's missing and replace it? Not even every home-grown compost is going to have all the right nutrients all the time.

What's going on in my SFG

Post  Sweetmama on 5/19/2010, 1:54 pm

Greetings from Arkansas!

This is my first SFG and most things are doing well. I'm thinking I need to do some more pruning on tomatoes. The last rain really sent them shooting in all directions! My bell/sweet peppers seem sluggish compared to jalapeno peppers. Potatoes and cabbage are becoming giants that have to be dealt with! I've added some pics and would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

This is what is going on in my SFG.

Pictures didn't come through first time. Think I have it figured out.

OOPS, now I have one picture twice! Forgive my feeble attempts with technology!
Make it a great day where ever you are!

dansamy: good point, I guess I am not happy unless I am guilty about something! LOL.

Sweetmama: Looks great to me. I can't wait until mine start really filling out.
