SFG in a shade?

Post  Jola on 5/17/2010, 2:38 pm

Has anyone grew vegetables in a semi-shade? My back yard is small and almost entirely shady. My current SFG is in a front of my house. I want to put more boxes, but the only area I can put them on would be in the backyard with about 5-6 hours of afternoon sun. What vegetables would be good for such conditions, if any?
Thanks.

I am in zone 7 - NC, but I have had luck growing tomatoes reduced sunlight conditions (early morning sun only). Also, currently I am growing lettuce, spinach, arugala, raddish, and 1 tomato plant in a spot where they get 2-3 hours of sun. I also grew a broccoli - but it was about half to 2/3rds the size of the ones in my sunny garden. My carrots are stunted. My cauli's seem to be doing fine. I am also trying bush beans - I read somewhere that I would be OK with them in a more shady spot. I only have 1 plant in that spot since it gets less sun than my early morning spot that does well - trying all kinds of spots in my yard this year... I am fortunate that I have options

This is my 'ideal link' for what might work in that spot...

good luck
