Favorite Mix of Soapy Water?

Post  alouwomack on 5/17/2010, 4:18 pm

Hello all. I'm pinching, smashing, and spraying aphids everyday off of my tomatoes but I'm not winning the war. Could anyone give me the best ratio of (and type) of soap you use with water to spray on the critters?

Thank you!

I just use a squirt of Dawn in a quart of water and spray it on. But if you have that many aphids, I'd suggest Neem oil. It does the trick almost instantly and is completely benign to humans. As a matter of fact it is used by some for health reasons.

Thank you. I thought it was dawn that I've heard people use.

The aphids aren't taking over yet but its making me nervous. This whole bug thing is really driving me nuts. If my flower gardens had this many pests I would have one ugly yard!

Will the neem oil hurt my ladybugs? I just saw a few in the garden today, so I'm hoping they will help me out with the aphids Smile

This is the recipe I use
1 cup vegetable or white mineral oil
1 1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons dish soap or Murphy’s soap

Yes, unfortunately it will if sprayed directly on them. I make sure there are no beneficial insects around when I spray. I picked off some ladybugs from the sunflower I sprayed the other day, and the next day they were back and seemingly happy.
