Tomato blight?

Post  littlesapphire on 5/20/2010, 9:25 am

I've been growing tomatoes for a few years now, and usually I have no problem with them. While the rest of the garden dies out for me (for one reason or another), the tomatoes usually do fairly well.

This year, though, I'm having trouble with my tomatoes. I planted them from seed and just put them outside this past weekend, and already one of them has died on me. Its leaves turned light, almost white, and it started to wilt. I thought I would just go out and buy a tomato to replace it, but everywhere I"ve been, the tomatoes look terrible! Their leaves are brown spotted and wilty looking. I don't know what's wrong with this picture, but my mom told me that there's a problem with tomato blight this year.

Should I just give up on tomatoes this year, or is there a way to handle this situation? I'm afraid for my other tomatoes. I pulled out the one tomato that died, just in case it had a disease that would spread to the others, but I'm not sure what to do now. I want to have a nice full garden, and if I wait any longer to see if my tomatoes will live or die, I won't have the chance to plant anything else in those squares.

I'm especially disappointed because I had planted some yummy heirloom tomatoes, which are the only kind I can eat raw.
