What's up with my limas?

Post  Megan on 5/22/2010, 6:11 pm

I don't know if this is a problem or not.... don't have the experienced eyes you do. Help please?

Here are my pole limas, just out of the ground this past Thursday. I thought they looked pretty good.

And here they are again today... looking a bit beaten up? What is going on here?

I have seen small bugs -- they look like ants with wings, and maybe that's what they are?? black, transparent wings, like a small fly -- all over the place for some time now, and I thought they were just attracted by the compost. I have seen them on the limas, but on other plants too. I've seen ants, and something I think is a parasitic wasp (tiny!), and worms and various creepy crawlies, but nothing obviously munching.

Everything else seems healthy, and my other pole beans (black, not lima), several squares away, are fine.

Neem oil and water.

if the insects concern you try a lil misting bottle with a neem oil mix. That will kill any pests and is organic. Just keep your mix moist as the beans grow. My kidney bean plants looked a lil rough as they put on their first true leaves, but they perked up after a day or two.
