Onions popping out of mix?

Post  milaneyjane on 5/24/2010, 2:32 pm

I planted my onion sets a few weeks ago. As soon as the roots started to grow, it pushed the onion bulbs right up out of the top of the mels mix. I have tried pushing them back in and have also mounded more mix on top of them. Is this nomal? I am assuming it is because the mix is so nice and soft.

Mine did the same exact thing... I just kept gently pushing them back in daily and mounding slightly... the tops are now about 2 +/- inches tall, and they don't seem to be popping out so much any more. When I first planted the sets, I had trouble with the darn birds thinking the brown pointy tops were worms sticking out of the ground.... several got pulled completely out of the ground on a daily basis until they had rooted well. Fortunately, when the unsuspecting bird realized the onion he'd just pulled up wasn't a worm, he'd leave it be. I had to put several back in the ground twice one day!
