Hello from St. Louis

Post  extremesoccermom on 5/27/2010, 8:49 am

HI! I am Sandi from St. Louis, MO. My father loves to garden but when we were kids he worked 2 jobs so mom could stay home. I took over his "garden" when I was in highschool. At that point it was just a weed area from years of neglect. He tilled it up for me and I spent many summers row gardening with little success but I loved being in the yard all the same.
I had a small area for gardening in my new home but never had the time or energy after having children to do much with it.
Now years later dad is retired. We love to compare and share our gardening secrets. I have a small yard compared to his but last year I built 4 raised beds and converted my little flower beds to vegetable beds to help keep food costs down. They did not do very well due to a problem with rats in my area. (I think we have the problem taken care of this year.) I found Mel's book in my search for a better more efficient way of gardening.
We filled 2 of the raised beds with a mix of dirt and compost last year. I added more compost this year but have already planted in them so I will leave them for the rest of this year. In bed 3 I started a lasagna bed. Now after reading The New Square Foot Gardening I decided to try that in bed 3 as well as building 2 more small boxes for the side of our front yard. I am having so much fun rediscovering my ROOTS.

Howdy and .

In our first year of raised bed gardening I too used a mix of compost and soil. The results were better than in the row garden we had before, but, because I used some of the soil I had in the row garden I also added the weed seeds that were there and yep, we had weeds. After building more boxes and staying with Mel's Mix all the way we have very, very few weeds and what were there were easy to pull and we had lots of veggies and flowers.

Again Welcome and
God Bless,
Ward and Mary.
