Do u still think it's SqUaSh?

Post  1chichi on 5/28/2010, 9:31 am

I asked about this enormous plant that volunteered in my yard, and I was told it was squash.
Well, so far only 1 vegetable has escaped the bugs, and this is it.
It is round.
Do ya'll still think this is squash?
I thought squash came out more tubular.
But hey, I've never grown anything this large before.
It is coming up out of an old compost site where I dumped chicken poo too.

The leaves look like squash. It could be a hybrid between squash and pumpkin -- that happens a lot in "compost veggies". I just love surprises with volunteers. Who knows? You might be growing a brand new veggie never discovered before. Please keep us posted.

Oh-oh! I hope that's not powdery mildew I see on the leaves and stem!

Looks like a very happy pumpkin. Did you eat pumpkins or carve jack'o'lanterns last fall?

No, that's DE. I treat it every 2 weeks.
This plant can't not possibly take any more trauma, as the bugs are doing a number on it.There are probablyabout 25 blossoms on it, but only this one survived.

Oh my gosh! You may be right. I never thought about pumpkins.
I forgot, I bought a couple of small 50 cent pumpkins for the chickens, maybe a few seeds remained. That would be so cool.

Cantelope was the last thing I scraped out of the compost heap.
I had one squash & one zucchini plant last year, but they were was covered w/
(what I now know to be) bug poo. I gave most of the vegetables to the chickens, and the rest to the compost heap.

Could be pumpkin. I planted some Asian squash that is round and ends up green and yellow striped. There are also watermelon and cantaloupe, but you would recognize them by now and no one would call them squash.

When I was a little girl, we had a garden in the yard with pumpkins and watermelons. My brother, sisters and I called all of the fruit 'Punkamelons'... and that's what i think you have here!

Belfry bat and Chocolatepop,
I never heard of hybrid squash and pumpkin. Sounds like it would be a fun garden experiment.
I wonder why I haven't seen "Squmpkin seeds" or something similiar for sale.

I had a cue-ball zucchini last year... not SFG... mature size was just a little bigger than an actual pool cue-ball.
How big is your "squmpkin?

Right now, the squmpkin is about the size of a medium fist. It's heavy too.
The stalk coming out of it is thick and hard like a pumpkin.
I've never grown a pumpkin before, this is exciting.
How did your cue-ball zucchini taste?
Do you have any specific growing tips for it?

my daughter did a pumpkin tomato oddball looking plant last year LOL, she loves to just mess with seeds.

to me it looks like a pumpkin.

Those round zucchinis look cute, no more room right now or I'd be buying them LOL.

I keep buying seeds and than have to build more boxes, never ending cycle.

Probably because the crossed seeds would end up sterile the second year. That happens a lot with hybrids. When I lived at the convent in England, I saw a really strange "thing" in the garden and the gardener told me it was a squash/ pumpkin cross. It was round with a bright orange bottom and dark green top. Unfortunately I didn't stay there until harvest, but I understood they served it for a meal and it was "interesting" but good.

I wasn't very successful with this... only got two fruits on the plant. I wasn't doing SFG last year, so I am not sure what to advise. The flavor was pretty much like regular zucchini. I wasn't sure when to harvest, and I let one go too long and it became woody.

I don't see anything wrong. Here's what I know; tell me if it answers your question.

Your quote "Those are so...." was done by using the quote button in the tool bar at the top of the post text edit box.

My quote " :nurse: kat424 wrote:..." was done by using the green quote button at the top of your post. You would use it instead of the 'post reply' button.

Any help?

Here's a picture of some of my squmpkins from a few years ago. I had squash and pumpkins next to each other, then must have missed one and it rotted and, well proliferated!
