My Square Foot Garden - Version 2

Post  joebee78 on 6/1/2010, 10:13 pm

As I mention in my introduction post, this is my second year of doing the square foot garden. Last years beds were just rectangles, but this year I wanted to expand and make it look a little nicer. In addition, my beds last year just followed the slope of the ground, so the downhill side did a lot better than the uphill, so I wanted to level things up. Here is what I came up with:

I still have to build some trellises for the vertical plants, and would like to build another 'ring' around this one. In the open area in the middle of the all of the beds, I'm planning on making a level spot for a sitting area and a small pond. And I still need to build composting bins.

Those beds are gorgeous! I can certainly 'feel' your engineering background. Did you fill the beds with something before a top layer of Mel's Mix? How many inches deep do you have the Mix? Your layout on rolling land certainly lends itself to having space for long-rooted crops like carrots, parsnips, turnips and potatoes.

Thanks for the kind words

Post  joebee78 on 6/2/2010, 4:26 am

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I got a lot of the ideas for my layout by looking at the different photos here and picking and choosing things from different gardens that I liked.

To answer the questions, the top 6 to 8 inches is the mix. Underneath that is what I guess you would call topsoil. The previous homeowner had several truck loads delivered to the house, as he was planning on leveling up the front yard. He never did that and the dirt mounds got covered with weeds and brush. The dirt portion is pretty good stuff - it's loose and free draining without a lot of clay. I used it last year for Version 1.0 of the garden and it did really well. Unfortunately, it has lots of rocks, so I made a 2 foot by 4 foot frame with wire mesh stapled on one side so I could separate out the rocks. All totaled, I think I screened about 40 wheelbarrow loads of dirt to put in the bottoms of the beds, before the top layer of the mix. I still have over half the dirt mounds left to clean up, so that's why I'm planning on building more beds and constructing a sitting area in the middle.

As for what we planted, so far it's (number in parenthesis is the number of seeds / plants):

Bush Beans (81)
Pole Beans (104)
Beets (128)
Broccoli (26)
Brussels Sprouts (4)
Cabbage (16)
Carrots (160)
Cualiflower (18)
Corn (80)
Cuccumbers (64)
Eggplant (4)
Lettuce (44)
Onions (192)
Peas (216)
Peppers (30)
Potatoes (Cool
Radishes (32)
Sunflowers (Cool
Spinach (81)
Summer Squash (Cool
Sweet Potatoes (4)
Winter Squash (2)
Tomatoes (35)

Some of the things like spinach and lettuce aren't all planted right now - I'm trying to stagger the plantings of those so I don't get overwhelmed with them all maturing at the same time.

Oh, what gorgeous land you live on!!

Those beds are amazing.....and are the tops beveled (sp?)? That looks so nice!

Great job. Please post pictures later on so we can see the progress your plants have made.

All those beds are awesome! I'm amazed at how much stuff you've got planted. Are you planning on selling at a farmer's market? Can't wait to see updated pics as it all grows.

Nice looking SFG. It's a shame you don't have more space though... NOT! If only we all had that much open land to garden in, but, uh, I guess that would be farming then wouldn't it?
