Really late start

Post  isleofjava on 6/3/2010, 1:21 pm

We're buying a new house. The closing won't be until late June, so I couldn't start until mid-July. Do you think I'd have time to get ready and sow a late summer crop or fall crop? I'm thinking, maybe, carrots, lettuce ... Does anyone have any suggesitons, or should I start next spring?

Totally off topic (sorry!), but I'm terribly curious about your screen name.... I grew up in Indonesia, and of course, couldn't help but notice it...

My screen name

My name is nothing more than a play on words. I love coffee and liked the fact it created another meaning. I'd like to visit Java, though. I have several Facebook friends who live in Indonesia.

perhaps not as late as you think

Hi there

Congrats on your new house - how exciting!

In my humble opinion, your options are quite good. I came across these handy dandy little guides - it requires just a little work to customsize it for your zone, but I think you have tons of choices (ever the optimist).

http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2009/01/free-printable-o-rama-herbs-fall-and.html

that one is just for fall, and just incase you like it there is a spring one as well
http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2009/01/free-download-2009-spring-garden.html - it says it is for 2009 - but only because of the picture on the front cover - it works no matter the year.

Now, having posted that, I have noticed some of my seed packets advise slightly different planting times, but I am just combining my both bits of information to plant the most I can. some of the things I can plant in my area (zone 7) between late July and late august are

beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collards, head lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, lima beans, mustard greens, peas, radish, spinach, swess chard, turnips,
- all of which comes with the caveat that I just read somewhere that I could do it - I havne't proven it yet - ask me again at Christmas how it worked out but I'm gonna try some anyway. Some I need to plant no later than late July, and some I can plant right through September or later but it is a snapshot

You could perhaps start some seeds before you move if you want, or wait till you move, and get starts from your fav garden supplier - either one will still give wonderful homegrown bounties for late summer and into winter.

I hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you very much. I've printed out the Fall one and I'm going to sit down tonight and play with the possibilities. I figure I can get moved in and the beds built by around July 15. Let's see what happens.

Thanks agian.
